WVO concerns???
I've got some questions for all of you. I've been lurking here a while and am looking to you all for some advice. I'm looking to upgrade my '92 daily driver to a '98 grail truck. I have located one that has had a WVO conversion for about a year. I'm not real familiar with these and wondering if there is anything I should be looking for that may have had a negative impact on the truck?
Thanks in advance for your feedback.

I have been running WVO in my truck for about 50k now and thus far the truck still runs like a top. These are a few things I would want to know.
1. What kind of WVO kit is on the truck(some have had many problems).
2. How well the owner filters the WVO.
3. If the engine is up to operating temp and that the WVO is hot before injection.

Most common problems with incorrectly run WVO are coked up injectors and sometimes valves.
Beware that a lot of folks who once touted running WVO no longer do because of the long term engine damage they saw firsthand

I would automatically discount the value , I have seen a bunch of info [ from shops ] links [ from so called organizations ] ect. , that I am still of the opinion that any non processed vegi oil [ not bio-diesel ] is not a good thing .
Then there are the issues above , how good of a job [ filtering / quality ect. ] was the last owner doing with a questionable fuel source ?
Some do a better job of doing a wrong thing & get away with it longer , some screw it up right away .
Reversing any bad affects is the question in my mind .
I would want an extensive repurchase checkout before settling on a price .
Do you know the owner [ to trust any answers ] ?
Why selling ?
I would not add any value , for any kit in truck , unless you could use for some other use .
I did some organizing of my computer the other day , and do not know how to put some of the info I referred to here from folders in " my documents " .
Yet .

Thanks Guys.
I knew my gut was serving me correctly. I'll ask some of these questions mentioned above.
Any more direction on specifics to look at when I inspect the truck?
I don't know the buyer, but he seems honest.
Keep the info coming...

What area are you in , sometimes a member will be happy to help , also for info , your area & temp. , seeing how it starts on a cold day , not plugged in [ -10*F ] would start to be a good test .
As mentioned above , the higher the value placed on it , the more checking out/testing .
What are they asking ?

Thanks. It's in the south so a warm climate. Asking more than book but who doesn't for a 98 12V. It's pretty much stock, a few cosmetic fixes that need done and I may negotiate for. Sounds fairly descent mechanically though. Have not seen it yet. Thinking of offering in the neighborhood of $9000.

System has a heater and in-line filter, not sure of the brand of set-up.
I would prbably leave it on the truck for a while, but no advantage in running it at the moment. It is set up to switch back and forth from diesel to the WVO. Sounds like he always started up on diesel then switched over.

RR,
If the vehicle only has ONE heater I would be VERY concerned about upper ring land coking AND injector tip deposits.
I have 35,000 miles on WVO and have had the injectors out to look just as a precaution. My setup has 4 heaters on it to absolutely ensure the oil is up to temp. Additionally, I ran larger injectors for about two weeks but they would haze while at idle so I promptly took them out (unburnt WVO is NEVER good).
Just my $.02

Just a quick off topic question....Is this the same for Bio diesel?
Dave , I'll answer that one , one of the main things that cause the issues , is the triglycerides [ glycerin ] is not removed in any WVO/SVO , only the bio , to add to that , the bio is PH balanced & a few other things .
It takes a lot more to burn the glycerin's & even then not all the deposits leave the engine , that is the largest single issue [ depending on how many other aspects of the WVO have , salts , PH ect .

As long as bio is made correctly it is no different than petro diesel except that it gels at a higher temperature.
Just read that a 747 took a flight on bio, think they would take the chance at 20,000 feet?
