Why a fuel pressure gauge?

Why a fuel pressure gauge?

Seems most people run them. I had one on order but realized I'm broke (umm, what else is new). So I've got the tranny temp and EGT for now, with one empty pod.

Then I started to think, 'would I rather have a boost gauge?'

So, a guy runs a fuel pressure gauge just to ensure that the lift pump is providing enough fuel? Or injector pump damage may result? Or as a quick diagnostic in the event that it fails?

A boost gauge would just be for bragging... No real purpose. I'm ONLY going to do a fuel plate and a GSK.

uhhh. yeah we believe ya... you dont need it, since you have a 12valve the p-7100 isnt lubed by the fuel its lubed by the engine oil psi so no real worry about fuel psi.being low. on the 12valve it probably used as a service minder when the fuel filter needs to be changed psi will drop.

Assuming that you posted in the right forum...you probably dont need a fuel pressure guage. You have a 12V correct?

If so, throw a boost guage in there - its not just for bragging. Its about monitoring you engine and the boost guage will let you know how well your turbo is working. Mechanical BOOST and FP guages are cheap and can be had for $40 each...or less if you dont care what they say on them.

Yeah, I have a 12V. Didn't realize the fuel wasn't used as lubricant.

I'll probably look into a boost gauge then. It shouldn't be too much, even if it will be an autometer and I have to special order it from the other side of the border.

Theres lots of suppliers that carry guages in Canada - check out:

www.piersdiesel.com
www.bd-power.com
www.nadp.com
www.mopacautosupply.com/ - they all carry autometer.

I think Lordco even has guages.

Lordco carries autometer, but doesn't stock a lot of it. Other than monster huge tachs.

I order through them, takes a while and isn't exactly cheap. But a mechanical boost guage should be decent, it's the electric gauges that aren't.

Agree with you

but i must add. I run a fulltime FP gauge on my ride, Its a good filter minder, and it also seems to let you now if you have problems up at the IP, if the truck dont start or starts hard with low FP it will let you know that something is wrong with the fuel system. Mine has more than paid for itself with the LP, OFV, and even with leaks in the rubber return lines it will lower in pressure as well...

Awesome diagnostic tool, and for the ease of installing it, well worth it...

Way I look at it any gauge that keeps you from walking is a good gauge.
With the introduction of ultra low sulfur diesel and more biodiesel blends in the future, both of which have solvent properties that clean clean out your fuel system, filter plugging will be more common.
Better to be ahead of it, without a gauge you're only guessing about your filter's condition.

IMHO, If you are concerned with fuel pressure, I would install a pressure switch and LED warning light. Less space and light comes on at the set point for pressure. I don't run either one but it is an option..
