White Smoke and Sputter
White Smoke and Sputter
Still getting some sputtering and quite a bit of white smoke starting around 1800 rpm's.
1. I have replaced fuel lines from tank to engine, both were 5/16
2. new overflow valve
3. new lift pump
4. rebuilt heater/strainer assembly
5. adjusted valve clearance
6. fuel filter less than 3000 miles
The truck is still on the lift, is there anything else I have forgotten about that can be causing this?
Is the white smoke and sputter expected until these engines come up to operating temp?

It is consistantly staying above 50 degrees here. Someone explain how this thing SHOULD run when I first start it up when it's warm.
I was under the assumption that all the white smoke was due to air entering the fuel system but I am very certain that is NOT the case.
I have read on DTR that there is a filter in the tank but when I serviced my heater/strainer there was very little "gunk" trapped by the screen. Makes me think the screen in the tank isn't plugged but who knows at this point.
Is it common for the 12V to slip timing? What causes the slip?

It is fairly common for them to slip, or so I've read. As I understand it, the pump shaft is tapered and that it's only a press fit that holds the gear in place. Plus, if someone's been in there before and had the gear off, any contamination on the shaft or the gear will cause premature slippage
Well if the pump timing has slipped, wouldn't it smoke and sputter throughout a wide range of engine speeds or would it only begin to be noticeable at higher rpm ranges like what I am seeing?
Timing will help, with 170K miles your injectors "could" be worn a bit...I took mine out at 240K and pop tested them, anywhere from 215-235bar. I'm not sure, but I know if they are supposed to be 260bar, then mine are a bit low.
Now I have timed it and changed injectors (although I went with a 300 marine injector which will cause a little white smoke on their own in cold weather), and I still have a sputter/miss/pop starting at 2200RPM even after the thing is at operating temp.
I'm going to change to a 913 injection pump sometime in the next few weeks, and I'll see if that cures it (I've been told my pump could have a sticky plunger). If not, back to the drawing board.
I suggest to have it timed and see if that helps, if it doesn't, you might have the injectors tested and see how worn they are.

Is the pump timing something I can do? I have some basic skill but follow instructions from this site real well............ as long as there are good pictures and the words ain't too long. You know.....monkey see, monkey do.

So if I take it to have the timing checked and set if needed, what is that going to cost me?
If the timing does need set, is there any reason to advance the timing anything over the stock settings when the rest of the truck is stock to the bone?
