Where's a good place to get a rear main seal for a 1991 12V?
Where's a good place to get a rear main seal for a 1991 12V?
Just went to the Dodge dealer and they want over $80 for the rear main seal.
Is there a cheaper place? Got the truck down to swap in a Getrag and figured I replace the seal.

Found these on Rock Auto. Much better prices than the dealer.
Not sure which one I need. Guess I'll have to pull the old one and measure it. Anybody know what is the repair sleeve they're referring to?

If there is a groove worn into the crank, the sleeve is pressed on so the seal has a flat smooth surface to ride on. Usually you put some some silicone underneath the sleeve before installing it. Another member and I did this on his truck, the special tools would make this job much easier. The seal must be installed dry, and you can't drag it over the shaft. The reg. seal has a plastic sleeve installed in the ID so the crank doesn't wreck it when sliding the seal on. Pull the plastic sleeve out afterwards. The problem with the speedi-sleeve seal is that the speedi-sleeve is installed inside the seal already. You can't pull it out or you'll wreck the seal. With the special tool, it will press the sleeve onto the crank at the same time as the seal into the housing. We didn't have the tool to do this. We ended up removing the seal housing, and installing the seal into the housing on the bench. Then we pressed the sleeve onto the crank with a combination to an automatic flexplate I had laying around, the flywheel for the clutch, the bolt ring for the flex plate and the long and short crank bolts. They are fine thread metric bolts, so its not just something you will have laying around. If you have enough spare parts laying around, you can do it without special tools.
When I did my 92, bought the installation tool from cummins, and believe it was 120 dollars. When I was done they told me I could return it if it was in "as new" condition for a full refund, so thats what I did.
