what is involved in changing the timing?

I am new to this sight and i just bought myself a 98 12 valve cummins with a a 5speed. I am going to take care of the KDP and someone told me to adjust my timing for better mileage and peformance. I am going to add a 10# plate, boost elbow and gauges for starters. What should I do or should I just leave it alone. The only what you can adjust it is by taking the front cover off right? Do I need specail tools? My dad is a diesel mechanic but he is not familar with the dodge cummins like you guys are. its 215hp

Im no expert or mechanic but Im pretty sure when they said timing they meant injection timing not valve timing. The pump has to be removed and done with a dial to be done properly

Take a few minutes to go over the link below and if your still wanting to do it i'll give a couple pointers on the tools instead of buying those listed

Someone told me it was just a matter of moving the timing gear one tooth when you take the front cover off. Is this right? It doesn't seem it after reading the link.

1 tooth would be over kill (to much timing will kill a stock head gasket as will to much boost)

Timing the pump isn't hard, but the right tools are a definite plus. Need a dial to read plunger lift, DV socket to remove the DV holder, a barring tool, puller and a torque wrench should get it done. You bar the engine over until you get the appropriate lift on the dial, pop the gear loose from the shaft, bar the engine back to TDC, reset the gear, and then verify that you have the correct lift. I obviously skipped a few details, but thats the jist of it. In my gallery, there is a picture of my timing kit that I put together for around $60.

It changes where you power band is. It makes the power come on a little later. Yes, you will get better mileage.
