What do I need?

Hey guys. Im wanting to put a fuel pressure gauge on my truck, but im probably just gonna mount it under the hood since its a 12 valve just so i can check it every once in a while. Im guessing I need a needle valve to keep it from pulsating, and im gonna tie into the system after the fuel filter. I guess ill have to buy a banjo bolt that is already tapped or has a fitting on top of it already. What kind of hose should I run(its gonna be permanent so I want somethin decent)? I already know what gauge I am getting, so I just need to know what kind of fitting I need for the top of the fuel filter, and where to get it. My truck has been sputtering around 3k rpm under load the whole time I have had it(since I put the 3k in), and i have the timing advanced so im thinkin low fuel pressure possibly. Thanks for any help

I dont have pics of my setup, but this is how i actually ran it. i used Infidels exact procedure and followed it almost to the T. BUT since my gauge came with the isolator i ran it to the isolator (DO not do that, save ur 129 dollars)

I went ahead and tapped the banjo bolt and hooked the needle valve to it directly. I permatex'd it directly and although it wound up upside down, it works well and suits my needs. From that connection i ran the stainless steel hose to the isolator which was mounted on the fender close to the brakes. From the isolator i used oil pressure tubing straight to the cab gauge and it wound up on the middle pod in my triple.

Now when i learned that the isolator does not work, or swapped it out, i went and found a dual male connection, and connected the stainless steel line to the tubing line and ran fuel directly. I have had no issues with this setup, Although if u want this can be a temp setup and u can just have a gauge under the hood. In either case PM me for more details if the need arises...

Thanks Rick. So basically, I can tap the banjo bolt(I have a spare), screw a needle valve into it, and then just run the plastic oil pressure tubing however long I need it to my gauge, and that way If I ever have any leaks, I can just close the needle valve. I dont need any braided line at all, correct? Pictures would be nice, but I think I know what to do. And I didnt plan on buying an isolator. Just an $8 gauge Thanks!

Yeah needle valve, then I would suggest a some cheap wire loom from the local parts store to shield the plastic line.

I need to do the same for my truck just to keep an eye on it since I'm pulling mine. Nice to tell when you need a fuel filter change too.

Hey guys. I ordered the gauge yesterday, and im gonna pick up a needle valve soon. Can I use an old overflow valve, take the ball, and spring out, and the bolt that holds it all in, and use that instead of tapping the banjo bolt in the side of the pump? The overflow is the same length, and threads. The only thing concerning me is that the stock banjo bolt has 4 big holes in it to flow fuel through. The overflow only has 2 smaller holes, and not as bog of a hole in the center. Can I just drill all these out bigger, and be fine? Or do I need to tap the other fitting? Thanks!

Just drill and tap your existing inlet banjo rather than fooling around with a OF valve, it's very easy. The OF valve's threads aren't tapered as most plumbing fittings are, leak is very possible.

Highly recommend that you either mount the gauge in the cab or make the under hood gauge with a long enough line so you can read it while driving, like held down by the wiper. You really want to see the pressure under load, never going to happen with the hood up.

I've had FP gauges in both my trucks for close to ten years, haven't leaked a drop. They are plumbed from the cab with 1/8" nylon boost line passed though 1/4" tubing to form a protective sheath. Mount the gauge down low on the dash, it isn't a gauge you need to look at all the time.

Well I have a spare banjo bolt, so looks like I will probably be tapping it, and I think now that I might even go ahead, and run my gauge into the cab. If anything happens, I can shut it down with the needle valve.Guess I will have to make a mount in the floor for both, my tranny temp, and fuel PSI gauges. I wish they matched, but oh well.

Can I tap a 1/4 inch hole in the banjo bolt, or is that to big? All I could find was a 1/4 to 1/8th needle valve at lowes, so I either have to find an adapter since all my oil pressure line fittings are 1/8th, or tap the banjo bolt to 1/4.. thanks!

I think 1/4 might be too big for the banjo bolt. I had problems finding the corect neddle valve localy, so I just ordered it. Here is the Grainger 1/8 needle valve that Infidel recomended, which is what I used:

You can also get it from Source Automotive:

might be faster.

Weatherhead p/n 6810 at my local NAPA. I had to go back in the fitting room and get it myself. The only thing they had there (6810) is male 1/8 NPT both sides. The cost of brass is going up, so it was $11.
