I am getting close to trying to start the 12 valve that I put into an Excursion. I have a few more odds and ends to finish up. I was wondering if there is anything specific I should do before I awaken the beast from its long slumber.

prime the turbo with clean oil, fill the oil filter, cummins recommends filling the oil pump when installinga new one(may be a good idea for you too)let her crank for a minute(on and off, let starter cool) to circulate oil to fill all galleries. i am sure there is more, someone else will chime in. got any pics, should be some project.

How do you prime the turbo? How do you fill the oil pump? I hope to post pics soon.

Pull the oil line to the turbo and put some oil into it to "prime" the turbo. If it would make you feel better you could pull the fuel shutoff solenoid and crank it over a few secs to prime everything but I would just follow DZ's recommendations and drive that thing!

Just unplug the solenoid.

I'm probably being overly conservative, but I'd:
1) Pull each injector and give a little squirt of oil in each cylinder
2) Oil the turbo as mentioned above
3) Fill the oil filter with oil as mentioned above
4) Disconnect the start solenoid and crank it a bit for oil pressure also as mentioned

Yeah I meant to pull the plug on the solenoid, not actually pull the solenoid. As for putting oil in the cylinder, good idea and bad idea. You would want to put the most minute amount of oil in there if you did because these things are tight, they ain't gassers.

And Keep in mind the engine COULD start on that oil in the cylinder , they are compression ignition engines.

Crank it over before you reinstall the injectors.

NO oil in injector holes.
It will puddle in the bowl and do nothing for lubing the cylinder walls.

Well I primed the turbo, did an oil change and filled the filter and cranked it for a while with the solenoid unplugged. Plugged in the solenoid and cranked for about 5 seconds and the beast awoke. Thanks guys
