What could this have caused to not work right?(spring in valve body was broke)

What could this have caused to not work right?(spring in valve body was broke)

I am changing the flood, and installing a Transgo shift kit in my tranny. We pulled the VB out, and there is a 4th gear spring or something that was completley broke in half, and then broke again at the end, and it was coiled up inside itself, and not doing anything from what i can tell. The TC slips bad if i step on it fairly hard, and its locked up, and it also kicks in and out all the time when im moving slow. Could this have caused any of this to happen? Im hoping the shift kit, and new spring(upgraded one came with the shift kit) will at least stop my tranny from kicking in and out, and hopefully it will help keep the TC from slipping as much, because it says it doubles lockup capacity, so well see. I should have it all back together by Teusday night hopefully, but who knows.lol I will report back when i get it in, if it helped anything, but would like to know what this spring could have cause to not function right. Its is a stiff, heavy duty spring, and has something to do with 4th gear. Thanks for any help.

Kicking in and out at slow speed,i believe it would be you're tps.I'am having the same problem.Solution is usually a new tps.You can try to clean it,but the fix doesn't last long.A new one is not cheap good,luck.

Well, the transmission just like kicks into neutral, and then if you wait a sec. it will kick back in. I dont really think that would be the problem, but maybe it is ? Could that cause it to do that? Also, the tranny had some black gunky stuff on everything. Would this mean its toasted, burnt up, or what?Thanks for the help.

Black Gunky stuff, was it magnetic? most likely really tiny metal shavings, it almost feels soft to the touch. A little bit (I am told by an expert) is normal. Silvery dust is TC clutch. Did you adjust the bands? If the bands are slipping, it is not good. If you didn't, I would go in there again and adjust them.

No, we havent adjusted the bands yet, but we are going to I think. Yeah, the black gunky stuf was all over the magnet on the pan, and was kind of soft to the touch. The magnet was covered with it. Dad is going to call a tranny guy, and ask about all that stuff, and ask how much a rebuild would cost. I may just need to have it rebuilt, and get iut over with as much as I hate too .

Kicking in and out of gear at low speeds or stopped can be from low or over full fluid levels.
Once the converter clutch slips a few times it becomes glazed and you aren't going to save it.

In that case, its already done for then i imagine, because it has been slipped quite a few times im sure. What do they do to the T.C. when they rebuild a tranny? The tranny was showing good on fluid I think, but maybe it didnt have enough or something? I just hope more than anything that it wont kick in and out all the time at low speeds and when im stopped. My truck would probably roast a new factory T.C. in about a week wouldnt it? Or do you guys think it might last a while before it starts slipping bad? Im just curious. Thanks for your help.

If I were you, I would order a rebuilt tranny from one of the top 4, and limp your tranny until the new one gets there. I know that Goerand Transmission has a LIFETIME warranty on the Torque Converter, and 100,000 mile UNLIMITED HORSEPOWER warranty. And it only costs 2500-2800 to get 'er done. My TC does about the same as yours, when you really get on it after lockup it slips. It has been doing that for probably 5 months now, but I have been limping it along until funds surface for a Goerand tranny. This includes towing 10K around this past week. Just be nice and it will keep going until you can replace it. But I wouldn't go with just an OEM rebuild. The money you would save going with a standard rebuild would be made up in replacing the TC 10K miles down the road. Just my .02

BTW, isn't it fun being a teenager trying to come up with the green to mod our trucks

Yeah.lol The worst part is; do you think a 16 year old that is getting his liscence in about 15 days is going to have an easy time limping around in a cummins?lol Well. For $2500 I would probably be a lot better off to go with a Goerend rebuild. Its just hard to make yourself shell out that kind of money on just a tranny.lol I will hopefully get a job somewhere this summer, and maybe ill just save up all summer for a good tranny rebuild, and just spend what i have to on diesel, and try not to buy anything else for it til i get the tranny worked out. I have been sick the past 3 days, so we havent really messed with the truck this week, but hopefully when I get beter, well get it back in. Thanks

Just remember that those back tires can melt down pretty darn quick, and for some reason they will cost more money The hardest part is not letting the ricers try and get by you!

Yeah, those ricers wont be able to see for all the smoke to get by me. lol We worked on it a while tonight, and should be able to get it all back together and drive it some by tomorrow night if we work on it.

Well guys. Its all back together with the transgo shift kit, and new fluid and filter, and it made a BIG difference. It never kicks out on me anymore(thank goodness), it shift a lot faster, and firmer, and the torque converter holds quite a bit better, though i can still roast it if i really step into it . Overall, it is doing a LOT better. Thanks for your help guys!
