Fuel Problem??
Fuel Problem??
I have a 1995 Dodge 1-ton 2wd truck, 12 valve diesel:
I seem to have a fuel problem, but don't know where to look other than what I have already listed below:
1) sometimes on warm days after it sits in traffic, or has been turned off and I start to put a demand on it, it cuts out and stalls as if it were a gas engine vapor locking, although I can put it in a low gear and keep the RPM up and I can limp along to get off the road, but it pings and knocks the whole way. and then stalls when stopped.
2) Also noticed when I was pulling a 24 foot travel trailer over the Jelico mountians - Interstate 75, it acted up and I had to pull off twice. at first I thought it was bad fuel so I drained the water seperator, reprimeed it, and put in additive and it ran for a bit but again later it stalled going up the same hill. so next time all I did was just reprime it each time after that, and that also worked for awhile, untill a demand was put on it. This made for a long trip, as I was afraid to go very fast
Has anyone experienced this before?

My '95 2500 did this when new, I feel for your frustration. It took me ten days to make the two day trip from Montana to Arizona, must have stopped at every dealer and stalled at every pass. They kept blaming clogged filters and wanted to charge even while under warranty, I knew this wasn't the problem. It only did it for me after 3 plus hours of continuous driving if the tank was below half full.
Anyway to make a three year long story short and many parts replacements that didn't solve it, even had the injection pump rebuilt under warranty.
I finally replaced the overflow valve even the though the fuel pressures checked out good. Hasn't done it since. My theory is that the spring in the overflow valve would weaken when the fuel got hot, when a load demand was put on the injection pump not enough fuel was available, the pump cavitated.
Give it try, 10 minute job.
