is there a website or other place to go where i can input the serial number of my engine and find out the history/inservice date? or can i call cummins and ask them? will be needing an vp and this motor has less than 100,000 miles but is not the original motor that came in the truck. thanks for any info.

To the best of my knowledge, the only info that can be gathered is from something like Carfax.com. That records the the history of the vehicle as a whole. As far as an accurate history of the engine, that's tough. So many individuals like myself don't rely on service centers and other mechanics to do work on our trucks. So, it's all undocumented unless some of us keep records and then it's a matter of do you trust the person that kept the records. Now, you may be able to get information from a dealer about warranty/service work, but, if it was done under a previous owner there may be privacy issues that a dealer will not want to disclose if the previous owners personal info is on their print out. You could try Cummins or Dodge and see what you get out of it, but, I would think it wouldn't be an accurate account of the engines history. At best, it would only cover what they did, probably under warranty, not what the original owner did in his own driveway. There may be the possibility that you could get the serial # of every part used in the engine and compare, but, I don't know if Cummins could supply that to you, at least probably not for free.

all i am really looking for is the inservice date. i would think that a guy coould use the ser# to find out when cummins sold the motor to dodge and when dodge put it in a truck. not really looking for maintenence records.

PM me the serial number of the motor off of the data plate and I will look and see if Quickserve will tell me anything about it,other than the parts list.

As for any warranty,I would bet money on you being out of luck.Unless a Mopar dealership did the install and when you bought the truck you transfered the warranty you will be on your own.I know its not what you may want to hear but warranties on these trucks are only transferable to from the original owner to the second owner.Once its sold off again its your baby if you buy it,unless you have a good working relationship with your dealer and he sneaks something through........Andy
