Water/Coolant Mix: Tap or Distilled for a top-off?

Hey guys, today I figured I would go ahead and add some coolant/water mix to the little coolant tank to get it above the "Add" level. I had to take out about a small soda-bottle sized amount when I was tabbing the KDP. So I put in some coolant, and I was reading on the back of the jug it said to do a 50/50 mix of water and coolant, and thats what the truck manual stated also. Nothing about distilled water.

So, I used water from my well. Its very clean water, it doesn't have anything in it like some people seem to have that makes the bathtub/sink/toilet drains have that brown "rusty" look to them.

So my question is it OK to keep it this way? Just to be safe I came back here and did a search and I saw a few threads saying that you should use distilled water, and a few posts about people who had wells just using that water.

I didn't flush the whole cooling system, I just filled the little overflow tank with coolant/water from the add to the full mark while the engine was warm. Is that ok?

The dissolved iron (rust) is only one portion of well/tap water that causes problems. Calcium is the worst.

The little you in should not be a problem

Yes, distilled water does not have the inorganic minerals that may be dissolved in your tap water. These minerals can lead to deposits in your cooling system.

As stated the little you put in probably wont hurt anything.
When you change it next time just ensure you use premix or distilled h2o or better yet go waterless.

This may seem like a pain but, if it were my truck, id drain it all and flush it with distilled water and flush, and then re-fill it with 50/50 antifreeze/distilled water. Better to be safe than sorry.

Well the good news is that I haven't driven the truck any since I topped it off, everything is still sitting in the overflow tank. So I could just empty that if you guys really think its necessary and just fill it 50/50 with antifreeze and water. I just looked under my sink in the storage room and found some jugs of water that we got a few years ago back when a hurricane was predicted to come through. They expired in 2005, so I wouldn't want to drink out of them, but it says "purified by distillation and ... (something lol)" so would just doing draining and refilling the overflow tank with this expired "purified drinking water" be a good idea?

When it's just a cup or two low and not a regularly occurring problem I just use straight antifreeze to top up.
Think about it, couple cups of straight antifreeze won't even be enough to change the concentration from 50 to 51 percent.
No big deal.

I wouldn't bother. That little bit of tap water is pretty harmelss.

For future you can mix a jug of 50/50 and keep it in the garage just for topping off the reservoirs. That's my trick. that expired drinking water will work fine for blending.
