Vlave Adjustment

I WAS ON THE CUMMINS WEBSITE AND I WENT UNDER THE DODGE RAM 12V SECTION AND IT TALKED ABOUT NORMAL MAINTENCE FOR THESE VEHICLES. IT SAYS FOR THE 12V CUMMINS THE VALVES SHOULD BE ADJUSTED EVERY 24,000 MILES. WHAT IS A VALVE ADJUSTMENT? WILL A NORMAL DIESEL MECHANIC KNOW WHAT THE HECK I AM TALKING ABOUT IF I MENTIONED IT TO HIM AND HOW LONG DOES THIS TAKE. BARE WITH ME I AM NEW TO THE CUMMINS WORLD BY GETTING RID OF MY POWERSTROKE,POWERCHOKE,POWERSMOKE. 1996 DOGE 2500 4X4 CUMMINS

Yes, any competent diesel mechanic will know what you're talking about. For more info click here.

My diesel mechanic says that whole 24,000 mile valve adjustment is a waste of money. These Cummins engines can go WAY more than this with only minor adjustments needed. In his opinion this schedule was cooked up at the factory to make work (AKA $$$$) for the support network.

Rather than every 24k the adjustments should be more like 24k, 48k, 100k and 200k.
Even then the valves probably won't be far out except at the first adjustment
