Question Valve clatter means?

Hello,

I have adjusted the valve lash within specs and still hear some clatter around 1200-1300 rpm while decelerating mainly. The noise was much more prominent before adjusting twice now.

My question is should I be concerned about it? Is there anything I can do to fix this without rebuilding the head?

Thanks ppl. for your input.

Hmm, with clearances so small, I don't know how you can hear the valve train. LOL.. I hear it on industrial engines with 0.050 valve clearance. The only thing I can think of is valve guide wear that would make the valve not seat completely flat under low combustion pressures and wiggle into the hole. The clearance would be so high though, that oil leakage and blowby would be an issue.

My truck has 335k miles on it - close to yours.... I could hear some valve train noise from time to time also. Checked my valve clearances and they were all a little on the loose side but I never did adjust them up because I just sent my head away (head gasket). Anyhow, they had to do a valve job - new seats complete with new guides - the valves were quite loose. Perhaps with your miles, it's just time to refresh that head - they don't all wear the same. Mine was all highway miles before I got it, but I only put around 10k miles on it. When I changed the oil the first time, I put on 8k miles and the oil level didn't drop - and yet the guides were quite worn... Very little blow-by as well..... But that's just how mine was, like I said, they don't all wear the same.

Thanks for the input, Mine may be due for some top end work but I adjusted them alittle tight about 0.001' over the lower limit and things are quiet except one valve still clatters around 1200 RPM when unloading. The motor does not burn alot of oil either but when I was using it on a 1500kL trip return recently I was stepping on it and then on return noticed the clattering issue. O_well I hope they stay adjusted now.

TCTS what does it cost in your area to rebuild the head? My head gasket is ok as far as I know.

Thanks again.
