vacuum signal too low, No power assist , What can I do?

1995 12 valve, CC, 2WD. : Ever since the day i joined this forum I had asked about why the vacuum is so low on these trucks, I have to get into tight spaces at work and avoid situations where I'll have to stop fast because of loosing assist. when i suggested buying a new pump and everyone said it won't help. the truck has 200K on it at this point , is it finally worn out ??? But I am tired and a little scared of loosing my power assist on the brakes ,especially with my camper or car trailer attached. It happens all the time if I have been idiling, but Thats When i thought it would BUILD vacuum. has anyone tried a reserve can ??? whats the alternatives ??
The problem is I just don't know when I can depend on having vacuum and it isn't like these trucks are easy to stop with weighing 6500++ Lbs. empty.
thanx , DAVE

You could try a vacuum tank out of a FRD.

If you don't release the brake pedal, you won't lose the vacuum as quickly. I find that if you are backing the tank is only good for about 3-4 stops and releases.

Dodge's fix is a tank and a few feet of hose for like $125.
Buy an after market tank for less than $20 or make your own out of a short piece of 4" pvc pipe with two caps glued on it and a port drilled and tapped in one end.

whats an FRD?
when backing up I'm good for maybe 2 hits, why is that ?

Bill, in otherwords MAKE a reserve tank instead of buying one, wher are they normally mounting them ?

I'm not afraid to buy a CRANE P/N 99590 reserve tank for $50 if someone can step up and will say that it cuts the head off this ugly little problem. like they did it and it works!

Bill I found a little info in my notes , Ford Electric vaccume pump E3hz-2a451-a 100$ dont remember where I got that info at. Seems like Mr.Jim Leonard told me that I could install a hyro unit on my truck and it worked good on a truck he did. He is a great guy. Jimk

Thats exactly what I did, I used a 5" piece I think though. Anyways I had problems 4 wheeling. I would lose brakes all the time, luckily I have strong leg from driving manual brakes all the time It helps but sometimes I still lose them.

Yu can locate it where they put the stock one on gassers, under the cowl, or the black trim piece that needs to be removed when you have to get to the wiper motor. I believe there is space to mount it on the passenger side. Won't be seen in there either. Kevin

I know that several people have switched over to the '99 Ford Superduty electric vacuum pumps when faced with replacing the $1000+ Dodge pump. Could also be an option for additional low rpm vacuum, they are a sturdy little unit that lasts a long time.

The Dodge tank mounts on the radiator support up front, you can see it though the grill.

I assume you have already done this, but check for leaking vacuum fittings..
Last weekend I was idly poking around under the hood with the engine idling, and I happened to find a huge hole in the bottom of the rubber "elbow" right off the vacuum pump inlet!
The hole was sucking in a huge volume of air, yet the pump still was pulling enough vacuum to actuate my A/C dampers(albiet slowly).
Replaced it with a straight adapter since that was all I could find...
It sure made a big diff when I flipped the A/C to defrost!!!

BTW: That vacuum pump sucks harder at higher engine RPM's. Problem was worse at idle.

Ford. Sorry

I understand , we're not allowed to actually say the word.

Sotexrattler- A while back I found that one of the small vacuum lines under a sheath was sort of melted, from what i don't know. but finding that was a dig deal. I am also now (again) having problems with a/c ducts so i will check ALL lines good again. thanx for all the help guys. DAVE

I got my 3 GSK today and will attempt that also.

Crossy: Take a look at your vac lines and check for lube oil contamination inside...
That stuff wrecks the vacuum motor's rubber diaphragms, vacuum hose fittings etc.
The check valve right at the vacuum pump croaks and quits "checking" and allows oil to be sucked back up into the A/C damper motors etc. I understand there was a TSB on this very problem all because of a crappy checkvalve.

I would definitely check for vacuum leaks. These pumps usually don't give much trouble, except oil leaks. Tee into the system with a gauge and read vacuum at idle, then unhook the main line right at the vac pump, and read vacuum right at the source. The two readings should be close to the same if there are no leaks, somewhere over 18 inches.

Pardon me guys, Im sorry for interupting, but I have been reading along and trying to learn. Could somebody tell me where to find a diagram of the vacuum pump. I don't know where it is, or what it looks like. Thanks, Marv.
