Vacuum pump seal orientation

Used the forum search to find the vac pump seal..ordered it from motion industries for $9 or something
What way does it go into the housing? my old one is horribly distorted and not even recognizable
Do I want the spring portion (back of seal) towards the power steering?
Or do I want the front of the seal towards it?

Thanks in advance

This is from the cummins kit I put in my 95.
13. Lubricate the OD of the new shaft seal with engine oil and press it into the sleeve with the dust lip facing down, making sure seal is fully seated in the housing.

thanks for replying...
what end is the dust seal? Leads me to believe its the back (the side with the lil spring thing) goes TOWARDS the vacuum pump so that the spring thingy isnt visable
Dont know how else to explain it

I was always told the sealing lip is the spring side with the dust lip being the outer flat side of the seal. The directions were a really low quality reproduction but it apperas that is the way it is shown also. Whichever side has oil on it should be the side with the spring. I just cant remember for sure from when I did mine about 2 moths ago.

Thanks for the info. I just set her at 16.25 degrees monday and gained bottom end! She was set at 10.5 degrees! I am leary of 370s being to hot but am thinking of getting some DD2s. A little pricey though.

Sorry to dig up such an old thread, but I'm still confused. I just did mine & it appears to still be leaking. The instructions with the Cummins kit were faded out & unreadable. I drove the new seal in with the "hard side" up, thinking that way was less likely to damage the seal. On afterthought, this way puts the "hard side" towards the inside, or oil side and the floppy "lip" facing the pwr steering pump side. Any help with pics would be appreciated. I'm an aircraft mech and whenever I've replaced similar seals (Garloc), you always hammer on the "flat" or "rigid" side of the seal. On this pump however, since the seal is in the retainer which gets flipped around to drive the seal out, this method puts the wrong side out (I think).

When you're done the spring side should face the vacuum pump. You can probably get it out without damaging it by driving against the "cross plate" that connects the 2 shafts.

Yep, I got it backwards. I called the guy at fixinrams.com & he was very helpful. He confirmed that I had it in backwards. I ordered the kit with the double-lip seal from him and found out that the seal kit is available without the video & special tools for a very reasonable price.

The last kit I got from Cummins had a double liped seal for about $9.00 plus the freight.
