Transmission ?
I picked up mine from the trany shop yesterday. I love it, put in a tripple disk T/C with a low stall stator and a shift kit in the V/B. and a few other goodys. Do It it's not cheep but you wont beleave the difference. I had a local shop do the work and am very happy with it. (She runs like a scalded cat!). Ask around your area for some recomended shops who have done diesels. You may save some money and get a good job.
I think I will get the tranny rebuilt. It just feels as if the motor is doing a lot of work and the truck doesen't go anywhere. I have a friend who told me he can build me a tranny but I am just a little worried about getting what I pay for. Thanks again for all the help. I have learned so much from you guys!!!!

After rereading your orginal post, I have a suggestion.
Adjust the throttle cable. You said it shifts into 3rd at 15 mph. Way too low with anything beside minimum throttle upshifting. If that doesn't resolve, you may have governor solenoid or transducer malfunctioning. Yes 300 degrees is overly warm, but you were backing up and possiblly under load. 300 will not kill tranny in five minutes. The hotter fluid gets, the shorter its useable life. Fluid should be changed (atf+4) when it changes from reddish to brownish. By the way, converters slip just about anytime they are not locked up. On stall testing, brakes locked in manual low. Accelerate engine as if taking off.
Do not push engine above 1600 RPM and do not stall for over 5 seconds at 1600. Smoke will start escaping from tranny within 20 seconds. Diesels generally have enough power to over load a converter with drive shaft not turning. If engine can easily pull up to say 1900 rpm you might have slipping clutches in transmission(remember smoke) or damaged fins in converter. If engine cannot readilly hit 1600 then suspect loss of engine power or stator not locking in converter. The final possibility is stator in converter locked and not freewheeling. This will cause loss of power at highway speed extreme overheating, and loss of fuel economy.
