Transfer Cases - Which years/makes/models have what?

Basically I keep getting the wrong transfer case for my truck.

I have a '97 RAM 2500 4x4 5-spd Diesel (long bed, ext cab). I have ~11" long output shaft from the rear of the case, a hole for the speedo gear, a 4-port vaccuum switch on the front, a flange for the front axle, and a 29/32 spline count. It's a 241D I believe.

The first one I got had a shorter output shaft, no speedo hole, and a larger spline shaft. The 2nd one had a shorter output shaft as well, different spline counts, and an electrical connector instead of a vaccuum port/tree. The next one they tried to give me that was supposedly out of the same truck was an NP231...I don't think those came in diesels.

I'm wondering if there's a chart that says what years/models came with what, and the identifying features of each (tailshaft length, spline count etc.).

there are 2 different transfer cases 241d and 241hd. the hd is the better one it has a single piece tailshaft the 241d has a 2 piece shaft and is prone to breaking if do any sledpulling.
http://dodgeram.org/tech/specs/tranfer_case.htm
then they are broken down into classes for their applications older dodges use the speedo gear, newer ones don't. the different lengths of the shaft are because one is for an auto i believe the shorter one and one is for a manual.
give haisley machine a call they know alot about these transfer cases, i didn't even know there was a difference until he showed me and told me what tro look for. they sale rebuilt t-cases 241hd but they are around $1600

as far as wich ones have a 241d and 241hd all depends on if it had a snow plow or towing package. all 3500 have the 241hd and most 2500 have the 241d but not all. it has nothing to do with the year

If you want to check there is an id tag on the back of the transfer case. All 98 and up 3500's had the 241hd.

yes you can swap them out durasmack they are the same size except the hd has a bigger internal chain and the tailhousing is one peice. haisley told me i should upgrade it they said that was the weak link in our trucks. you just have to find one that is an auto or stick depending on what you have
