when I get on the pedal pretty hard sometimes the tranny doesn't shift out of 2nd gear that well, it seems to hang around 2300 rpms along time before shifting into 3rd. It also seems to help if I get out of it alittle to shift out

sounds like you need to bomb your governor springs to 3000 rpm. that will let your engine rev past its current defueling point.
