Top end speed flat lines

My 96 3500 dually 5spd has little to no power starting around 2200rmp.
If i gradually accelerate then i can get up to 25/2600 or so with a top
speed without going into the redline is 65 or 70 mph.

I am a new owner of this truck last november. is this normal for this truck?

I have to start off in second because 1st is to low and i can redline it in seconds. not good.

My thought is that the truck is geared real lower for pulling.

I use this for work and pull a small boat and small 2 horse trailer.
mileage is anywhere from 15 to 18. 232K Truck in good shape

The reason your truck runs out of power is do to defueling. It is a combination of your stock fuel plate and gov. springs. Do a search on here for fuel plate and gov. springs you will find some good info.

Also check out this site, packed full of tech stuff.

Hope this helps

P.S. Beware of the BOMBing bug........it bites hard and makes your wallet thin

you also might want to check (assuming you haven't) the fuel filter and the pre-screen, could be clogged up.

It's not really geared that low. It has 4.10 rear gears for pulling, and 1st gear is not normally used unless you have a big load behind you.

With a totally stock truck, 65-70 is about the limit.

I'd say it was the lack of a 3K GSK. The truck will rev to 2500rpm but you aren't getting any more fuel past about 2200rpm. If you have a boost gauge you can watch it drop when you hit the rpm where the springs begin to defuel.
Get the 3K GSK and see what you think, it is the best mod you can buy for these 12vers, any other power mod first will just leave you dissapointed until you get the GSK. I'm sure other guys on here can back me up on that.

As said here it is your 4.10s running into the govener. You can do the governer springs, regear, re-tire (not retire), or drive slower.

Red face

Thanks to all for the responses, i think I will try the Govenor springs also i have not changed the fuel filter so I will do that first off.
How much work is it to self install the govenor springs??
is the 3K enough or will i ever need the 4K ?

I will not be doing any super modifications just simpler addons.

thanks Wayne

I put the 3k kit in mine and it works just fine, I can't see a need to rev any higher than 3000-3200 rpms unless you are racing. Also, I think the higher the rev. limit with gov. springs, the more sensitive the throttle is, especially with lots of fuel, not that I'd know anything about that

Like WildBill sez, 3K rpm springs are more than I need but, every once in a while it's nice to be able to wind 'er up a little. 4K springs add just enough extra care and work that, I don't need or want them. Either set are easy to change, just take your time and it'll be the best mod ever.
