Timming help please...

Ok first off i know there are alot of threads on this, but i havent found to help me completely. first off i bought a reman engine. i dont remember if i pinned the injector pump. i just got the snap on set today. i know i have to do the drop down method on the valve. and put my dial in the number one delivery valve. i was wandering what i have to do if the injector pump was never pinned. i want roughly 15.5 to 16 degrees. any help would be helpful. P.S. if i didnt word this question right and you dont understand what i am asking just let me know. Thanks Baker

Ya the wording is slightly confussing but basicly, set up the dial in #1 and find the heel on the lobe of the cam. Zero your dial and come up clockwise tell you get to your spec., pull the gear loose from the shaft, rotate the engine back to TDC, and tighten down the shaft nut. Go back and recheck it a few times to be certain its were you want it. re adj. if needed. There may be several ways of going it, ive only done it now 3 or 4 times but its always been right were i wanted it on the first try. Clean the shaft with carb cleaner or the like and torq. to 160-180 not the req. 144ft lbs like the book says. Good luck. Ryan

Really, i dont see why it would so long as your on the correct stroke of tdc. Has to be on the compression stroke theres a hole in the back of the gear you can use the timing pin to help find it, or if its broke off use a flashlight and a small mirror. Does your new snap on guage read in metic or inches? Good Luck

The more ive thought about it the only reason for pinning it is so you could remove the pump and reinstall w/o readj the timing, so long as the engine was never turned over.- No problems, just Ronco it: set it and forget it! he he ~Ryan~

thanks for the replies, my gauge is in milimeters, and i didnt think that not pinning the pump was that big a deal. i know my timing is close enough that it runs right now but it is retarded pretty good i belive. i am not gonna have time to mess with it until sunday, but i will let you know how it goes thanks again. do you think 15.5 is ok for my setup, i got stock hg and bolts, i do have 370s in it though, but i am afraid to go to much more. unsure of what all is done in the pump so far. thanks again Baker

I know how to set it, but dont have the first hand exper. yet to advise you were to set it, others would be better for that advise. Im at 18* now and will prob. end up in the 22-24* range with my set up from what it sounds like from others doing the same thing. Ive read 16* with stock upper end so i would think your 15.5* sounds like a plan. Later Ryan

so i finally got back to work on my truck today. it was my first time trying to time the pump, not to hard just difficult not to retard the timming any when tightning it. i was shooting for 15.5 and got about 14.5, i left it for now, and i am very happy with the performance of it. i will propably try to retime next weekend. thanks for all the hep and info. baker
