Timing problems-need help

try backing off the starewheel till its gives just a slight haze of smoke from dead stop mashing the go pedal..... what all is done to truck fuel plate inj DV's???? auto or stick

you are using the wrong chart for your engine

I ran into the same problem w/ my 95 cummins, i know it wasnt messed with, yet the timng came out high....i got a chart for setting up timing from a this website, however it was for a 96 or 97 cummins, which i though to be the same....so after an evening of similar confusion as im sure you had...i looked in a real cummins book and found a chart which also had my cpl#, and made more sense....i will go to my garage tonight and get the book and email you the correct chart...see if it helps....i cant remember the exact numbers, but i remember the problem...

yea, in the tech facts section of this website for a 12 valve there is a helpful article on timing however you cant use that chart for a 95....i dont know why....i will get back to you with the other chart

I appreciate any help on this, thanks pgm02002, whiterocket, my truck is a 95 3500 dually, five speed and 4:10 gears. DV's are stock. My fuel plate has been changed, I don't remember the plate number, but the guy told me it would make 230 horses/605 tq. I have an afe air cleaner, five inch exhaust, and stage one injectors from Pensacola Diesel. I now have my timing set at 17 degrees. This flutter/bucking or whaever you want to call it really didn't start until I put the new injectors in. The guy at PD told me to bump my timing to 17, as he thout that would take care of it. Well, resetting the timing did help it a lot, but it still does it slighty. It also still wants to sputter a little when I start it after it sits all night. Should I slow the timing down more?

you do have the right chart...im lookin at the cummins manual....12.5 degrees = 5.7mm...17 degrees = 6.6mm good luck

Two things to check. The sputter when starting may be a problem with fuel lines getting old and letting some air in/bleeding off pump priming. If they haven't been replaced you should just do it before they give out completely somewhere in Egypt.

Second, with bigger injectors the stock delivery valves may be the other sputter problem. Many guys with the 370 marine injectors and earlier pumps had to upgrade to fix the rough running. Do a search for 370 injectors and delivery valves and see if this might help.

If stock headgasket and turbo, I would leave it at 17*.

I have one of the same sputterin problems it sounds like. A friend of mine put my dv's and injectors in while I was on a trip. He was gonna time it but he said it had been messed with before. Don't know what its at?? Its got a sputter till it gets on up in rpm's.

I ran the star wheel towards the back of the truck, and it seemed to help. Does anybody know how far back the star wheel can go? Does it have a stop, or will it screw out of its threads if I go to far? The wheel is currently at the back of the hole where the plug comes out. Truck seems to not buck and sputter as bad, and the black smoke has cleared up some.
