timing kit

i orderd the timing kit from snap on, but i don't have a barring tool. whenever i need to turn the engine i use the alternator. can this be used while timing, because i don't want to spend 100 bucks on a barring tool.

Problem with using the alternator is you can only turn the engine backwards. If you miss your mark you have to go all the way back around. It can still be done, just more hassle.
I made my own barring tool by welding an old socket to the gear off a burned out starter motor.

Yep - one of Harbor Freight's soft untempered sockets take a good weld, wont get brittle and break like a good ole case-hardened socket from the US of A.

It can be done but after you do it once, you'll buy the tool. The alternator nut spins the engine in reverse. A flat blade screw driver on the flywheel spins it forward (tooth by tooth) - it works on both automatics and standards. I thought they were maybe $40 on line?

Buy it from cummins. They are only $35-$40. Definatly worth the bucks. You will have enough other things to deal with when timing your truck. Not bad but you dont want the aggrevasion.

Might want to look into a 1/2" unversal and about 3' of 1/2" extensions, too. That way, you can roll it over from the top side. I got a cheap 2' long 1/2" drive extension from a swap meet once. Now, I wish I'd bought that 4 footer!

I cheated there. I used a 1/2-3/8" adapter with a couple of wobble extensions to a 4 foot extension. Sat right on top of the alt bracket and turned over nicely with a 3/8" ratchet.
