Timing and cam plate

What is the average cost of timing a 12V and what is the average costs of putting in a cam plate if a person was to take it to a shop to have it done? Thanks. SS

Most shops charge $250 - $300 for timing, it's rather involved.
Just guessing on a plate but would say less than $100 for labor only.

250-300$ . Thats pretty steep for a process that takes less than 30 minutes . You can get the timing kit for about 150 bucks and just do it your self. As long as you can read a dial indicator and turn a few wrenches you should be alright. The plate is a breeze as well. It only takes about 20 minutes to do . If it were me I would take the time, save a 400 dollar bill and do it myself. Im Not saying there is anything wrong with getting someone else to it for ya but I dont think it worth that much cash personally.
Good luck either way and if you do get someone else to do it for ya make sure theyre not stickin' it to ya .

I have timed my truck a blue million times but have never timed one for someone else. A guy asked me the other day how much I would charge to time his truck and install a cam plate and I was not sure what labor charge should be.

If you find true TDC ect it will take about an hour or so, I charge $100.00 for timing, if someone thinks that's too high then oh well.....it's not worth my time!

How long will it take you to do it? We charge $70/hr for field service work (on site) and 65/hr for shop labor.

When I do side work I usually figure $48/hr for field work or $40 for shop work at my house.

Obviously labor rates vary considerably depending on demographics.

True about the plastic pin, but it has been my experience more than once that the pin does not represent true TDC. I drop the valves to make sure. SS

100 bones is a pretty reasonable price, I wasnt tryin to tell the guy to withhold his cash from everybody just to make sure he didnt get ripped. I dont know too much that is worth 250$/ hr .

hey dsljunkie- where can you get timing tools for $150?

I'm looking for them, and the SPX miller 6860 set is about $240+

that makes the difference- for $150 I'll definately get the tools & do it myself..

Thanks in advance..

It certainly does if it's never been done before. A high percentage of engine's whose timing I've set is below the factory specs.
While you're at it you may as well bump it up to 16°.

Thats cheap. I will be heading up there soon after I get my truck back together with a new headgasket, 4K GSK w/ springs, fuel plate and what not, I will need a timing bump. $100 is cheap

I was going to put twin turbos on my '00 24V, but found this sweet 12V and I love it.
