Switching to synthetic oil on high mileage truck?

The truck I just bought has 194k on the clock. Would switching to synthetic engine oil right now help or harm anything? Just looking for anything to prolong engine life. If not I have no problem with staying with regular oil and saving money! Thanks

It wouldn't hurt anything. I personally wouldn't bother if you drive much.

From: North Carolina or Kentucky. Take your pick
Syn is thermally stable as opposed to convential. It can increase the lengthof oil changes safely. It is without question a better oil, but does the engine see any large improvement? I doubt it. JMHO

I'm not sure its better at all and have no reason to switch to it. I think with the right advertising Americans will buy and believe anything. But whatever blows your skirt up...;]

My understanding is synthetic oil has more of a solvent effect than dino and can clean up sludge deposits in your engine that were blocking leaks.
I have a friend whose engine started leaking all over the place after switching to synthetic at 175k. Switching back to dino didn't help, he had to fix the leaks.
I've heard 150k thrown around as when you've got to be careful with synthetic.

I'm sure others on here with higher mile trucks can chime in, but I had a '96 I sold with 398k that I regret getting rid of. It now has over 670k on the clock and still runs like a champ (a little over 400 hp). It's always had regular Rotella 15w40. Perform regular maintenance on that truck and it will last you a long time. Just my .02-

When we had the farm, dad did regular oil changes on the tractors and trucks. He never left the hours go beyond the regular oil changes. In 45 years of farming we never had any problems with the engines needing a complete overhaul...

I run a semi-syn 15w40. I switched to it at about 185,000 miles and have had zero issues. The company I buy it from (Texas Refinery Company - I HIGHLY reccommend ALL of their products)offers free oil analysis. Right now I am at 12,000 mi since the last oil change and I don't plan to change it 'til they tell me it needs changing. I still change the filter every 4-5000 mi though. I like the analysis too, since it shows all the metal counts in the oil.

The best part I like about my dino Rotella is I get a rebate when I change my oil ,I dump the oil in the tank.
