Star wheel affect fuel mileage?

I messed with the star wheel factory setting a while back, in fact a number of times trying to get better mileage. I dont think it mattered much.
DOes moving the star wheel even affect fuel mileage?
Which way do you turn it to get less smoke? Towards the front of the engine or the rear?

Thanks,
Matador

Just answered pretty much the same question in the other thread.

Back towards the back of engine is less fuel, less smoke. Which should be down as you are looking at it from the drivers side. If you do a lot of city driving or like to drop the hammer a lot (before boost come up) it should help with MPG. Also slide the whole AFC housing back to help even more.

Hi neighbor.
Usually, the only way adjusting a star wheel will change your fuel economy is down. Blowing lots of black smoke is a sign the RFG needs better control. RFG = Right Foot Governor.
You tighten the star wheel by rotating it away from the engine so it moves back toward the driver seat.
Time to adjust your timing to 15° or so and possible a plate to give more low rpm power.

Hello, and howdy back there neighbor.
Will the star wheel affect power and mileage at 75 mph and 10 to 15 lbs of boost?
thx,
Matador

I would say not much unless you have it all pushed forward a ways and are past stock fueling levels. I can be cruising along at 70 mph and put it to the floor and let out a good bit of smoke, but it not like when you are going 20 when your in 3rd and mash it (I fog the road).

If you want to raise you mpg start all the way back and see if it is driveable for you. Start moving it forward and find the middle ground where you have enough fuel to spool the turbo good but not throwing out the tail pipe in the form of smoke.

sounds like I need to organize a work party for the area diesel guys.
Corrrected timing will give you better fuel economy. A plate and AFC housing slide with star wheel makes it fun......

Yes, I wish I knew more about this diesel of mine. It is the first diesel I have ever owned. I am learning a lot about it but realize there is much more to learn.
I think the biggest problem I am having of late is I think it seems to be smoking too much whiteish blue smoke on start up for too long of a period of time. The timing is pretty much stock on it. the injectors are you might as well say new as they were new a year ago and I just took them out and had them all tested to see if that was the problem. It has not started using any more oil than usual either. the rubber fuel line hoses seem to be in good shape as well too. I cant seem to figure out what it might be. I am hoping it isnt the p7100 injector pump itself getting worn out.
