sliding cam plate forward

I put a cam plate on my truck and Ive had a number of people say I should slide it forward to get a bit more power from the thing. Is this a good idea with an aftermarket plate? How far forward from the stock position? Does the governor arm need to be adjusted again?

its only a good idea if you have gauges that will allow you to see what is goin on in the engine. If not then i suggest u get gauges first then bump ur plate forward... BUT since u already have gauges, bumping the plate forward is a good idea. And yes ur governer arm will have to be adjusted again...

To far forward may help you get a new tranny much sooner...lol

Stock tranny might not hold a plate slid forward.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't the gov arm only contact the plate under WOT? I've heard and seen lots of plate adjusters and never a mention of adjusting gov arm. My plate is a little forward of stock, and I have no problems. When I cut my 100 plate I left the lower oem corner alone and started the curve there, assuming that if the gov arm was contacting the plate at that point, it would be OK afterwards. I'm still learning, so inform me.

You are correct, only under WOT or heavy loading.

so how does the plate work? The governor arm starts off touching the bottom of the plate at WOT and then rides up it as RPMs increase? Or do I have that backwards?
so sliding it forward adds the slid amount to the whole rev range?
Its a **** shame my trans wont handle the torque down low when the pressures are low.. it really pulls like a tank on the bottom end of the rev range.
up top its revving like a gasser and the torque is lower.
