silpped timing???

well I'm pretty sure my timing has slipped, & it happened about 3 hours after I got the pump put back on!!!!! now my ? is is there any way to find correct pump timing, & then pin the pump, & then pull the gear & rotate the motor over & pin it & then reinstall the gear????? I don't know exactly why the gear slipped, I thought I had it tightened up good, I used a 1" drive socket & breaker bar, (my torque wrench only went to 150 ft.lb.'s) the only thing I see now that I probably should have done was cleaned the shaft & gear with a fast drying contact cleaner, I cleaned it with brake cleaner, but I read somewhere that the contact cleaner worked the best, so is there any fix for this short of pulling the pump back off & taking it back to the pump shop????? thanks, Dusty

The pump can stay on to be timed. If you don't have the tools take it to someone that does.

I time these engines with a light, hooked up to a pulse adaptor. I think that's the easiest way to get them back after they slip. It's kind of an expensive setup to buy, though. Infidel's right, don't take the pump back off.

I have a diesel timing light but only use it for checking timing. Have found it much easier to use the DV lift method when changing timing. With the light it's pop and move the gear hoping you get it in the place you want. Put back together start it up and check with the light, find it isn't where you want then go though the same process again.
With the valve lift method I only have to do it once.

I think I'm just gonna go ahead & order the SP500 snap on timing kit, that way if it was to ever happen to me or any of my buddies again I've got a way to fix it, I can name off probably 1/2 dozen trucks of friends/family that could use a timing bump, so if I got $20 here & there it would pay for itself in no time anyway, so next ? where's the best place to get the kit???? I've read that ADT or smokindiesel.com has the kits pretty reasonable??? anywhere else that I could get one ordered today & maybe have it by Mon. or tues.???? thanks again, Dusty

infidel, did you call snap on, or did you order it online????? I was gonna go ahead & order the kit today, but couldn't find a # to order, & wasn't sure about the whole signing up thing on the net, thought it might have been for their dealers???? thanks, Dusty

The easyest and quickest is to pull the plug on the side of the pump and turn the engine over until you can see the timing pointer in the pump, then pull the gear loose from the pump then rotate the engine to TDC lock the gear on and that will give you stock timing. If you turn the engine ovet until #2 EX valve is open that is TDC

Go ahead and sign up online. I ordered my timing stuff from them minus the dial indicater. If i was to do it again I would just buy the kit from snap on complete. It was a real pita trying to use either of the dial indicaters I have with their adapter. Using the adapter and all the parts I added to make it work it ended up looking like something off moster garage. The gear puller sure is slick also.
