Roadranger in 4x4?

I just couldn't imagine having to drive a road ranger tranny in my daily driver...
a stock Cummins will pull 30k just fine... even w/ 3.54's... sounds like an interesting project, but it sounds a lot like ____'n into the wind to me

Besides, I like a challenge...and I want to do it just for the sake of doing it. My projects aren't always the most logical, but they are fun. My father is currently in the process of putting an International Eagle cab on a '97 Dodge 2500 4x2 Cummins with 5-speed. Its at the point where its yard drivable. All heating and A/C are done, gauges have been adapted over (using all the Dodge stuff to keep wiring simple), pedals are in (modified the Dodge pedals to work in the International cab). Not logical, but a fun project. If it was me I would have chosen an older cab...maybe a 50's era Dodge.

Driving a RR is not that bad empty I scip every other gear starting out in 4th [3.42]
2nd in a 5600 is [3.38].Loaded it is easy to control EGT on hills.
NV5600 ratio 1[5.63] 2[3.38] 3[2.04] 4[1.39] 5[1.00] 6[0.73]
NV4500 ratio 1[5.61] 2[3.04] 3[1.67] 4[1.00] 5[0.75]
There are people that look at you like you are crazy when you tell them you have a 10sp

I havent read all the posts but I thought id offer up one idea. I work at a diesel shop for a dedicated fleet to wal-mart dist. centers. They run ottowa yard trucks that all have the cummins isb in them. they also run auto trannys. its an allison, its big, and can take more punishment than i have ever seen any other auto take in my life. Theres only one drawback, they are huge. either a body lift or new tunnel make work. just my .02

I just personally hate autos. This is my opinion...and just opinion...but I don't feel autos are good for heavy abuse. Look at the only places where autos are used extensively in the industrial world. City buses, school buses, yard trucks, some trash trucks, medium duty delivery trucks. They don't use autos because they are rugged, they use them so that anyone off the street can drive them, even with very limited experience. Sure, you very occasionally see an auto in a tractor-trailer, but only in trucks owned by one of the big fleet companys who frequently hire inexperienced drivers. The autos are typically mugh higher maintenance than a manual. The yard trucks probably last a bit longer with an auto because I'd be willing to bet that they have extremely low differential gearing.
Now before the flames start...I said this was just opinion. I know there are tons of people on this group who run beefed up autos for towing in their Rams. I won't argue with that. But from what I have seen, it takes a $4000+ auto with billet shafts, custom torque converters, etc. to put up with what an NV5600 and a heavy duty clutch handles.
Again...just opinion, and I'm learning more and more about the common setups people use for commercial use of their Rams.

I had a MT40 allison and a 5831 spicer aug.for overdrive in my truck the allison was not overdrive when it shifted it hit sohard that the tires would spin on each shift.I got better milage with the stick.

NHdiesel is going with a spicer out of a deuce and a half military truck. Its a 5spd with a slighty lower 5th than the 4500. He is still collecting a few parts and working on an adapter for the stock transfer case. It should be one heck of a setup.
