rebuilt computer for 97
rebuilt computer for 97
Anyone got a line on rebuilt computers for the dodge trucks. I am pretty sure mine is bad and I would rather put one on myself than let the dealer get his hands on it and into my wallet to deep. The trans will shift up to drive but no od.and no lockup, no tach and the alt. isn't charging. Could the crank sensor stop all of these things from working to.I have asked a couple of mech. and this is what they think is wrong with it. Where is the best place to get ahold of a rebuilt. They made five different ones for the 97, I've checked a couple of salvage yards but to no avail. Thanks,Gary
The ESS (no CPS on 12 valves) can cause all the problems you're having.
When I last needed a PCM the local junkyard got on the national computer and had a used one with a 90 day warranty the next day for $125. They are hard to come by other than junkyards because they rarely fail.
PCM wasn't the problem on the last one even though the dealer and two other mechanics said it was. Problem was bad female connections at the PCM, solution was to take the connector apart and squeeze the connectors tighter. Owner now has an extra PCM.
Another common problem that can cause the same symptoms is a bad key switch. A dirty/worn switch can cause a flickering voltage to the PCM that is so rapid you can't see it with a meter or in the vehicle lighting. Needless to say computers don't like unsteady voltage.

Thanks,I'll have a friend at the salvage yard do a search for one, I'm almost sure it's the ESS as you called it and it could have been my fault. I had the convertor locked and tried to get it to shift out of OD into drive and it wouldn't do it. The next day it wouldn't work at all. I can usually work on something till I break it!
Thanks,Gary
Thanks,Gary
I hate to get anything from the dealer I don't have to. They are absolutely to high on most things they do or sell you. I'll let the truck set for awhile and try to find a used or rebuilt part somewhere. If I do have to go to the dealer I'll grease myself up good so they don't do me dry!
Rammin On,I'll call you tomorrow with the numbers that are on the computer. I'll take it with me to work with me,I'm guessing the little sticker on it has the numbers on it.Thanks,Gary

Well, I got a rebuilt computer from TX.,put it on and it fixed the tac and the OD switch will go on and off but the OD convertor lockup and the alt. still won't work. Why does such a simple truck have to be so complicated. I have tried the crank sensor and that didn't help either. Any ideas from anyone would be appreciated. Thanks,Gary
The pcm needs to be programed for your particular truck
Which is why i suggested go to the dealership, i was told that there was a risk that it might partially work, it might work completely, or most likely not work at all, I dont see myself either howcome one pcm from one truck dont work for another, especially if its the same engine, and the same year.... Just sace u the heartache and headache and get the PCM from the dealer, i did, they programed it, problems were done... Best of luck and sorry bout ur misfortune...

This computer is rebuilt and is supposed to be programmed for my truck. The scanner shows that the solenoids is bad in the trans and it is in limp mode. If one of the solenoids is bad the trans automatically goes into limp mode. I may have to go to the dealer but I have a few more people to try first. The computer on it had a dead short inside so it was bad. The scanner shows code p0743,p0753,and p1765 which are all tranmission solenoids, but maybe if one of them is bad it will go into limp and shut the rest down,I don't know. The alt. part doesn't bother me, it can be fixed pretty easy even if the computer won't tell it what to do.
Dumb question Gary, but did you by any chance check the fuse for the alt. under the hood? I blew mine once when I was fiddling around and I took out my overdrive and my alternator quit working.
