Quick Clutch Question
Quick Clutch Question
Okay guys,
Quick question , we're all sitting here debating. If a flywheel has been on a truck or sitting out and got a VERY light coat of smooth surface rust , would it not be okay to leave it ? some people seem to think that using emery cloth or sandpaper to bring that coat of rust is the best option, also saying that if you dont when the clutch mates that the surface rust will clog in the pores of the clutch friction material?
lol i know stupid, i just wanted yalls thoughts!
thanks guys

If the rust will wipe right off with a light buffing, then it is ok to leave it alone and run the clutch. All flywheels rust a bit when a rig sets, and once in a while the clutch plate will actually stick to the flywheel and refuse to release without a load.
If the rust is pitting the surface enough to leave it rough, have the flywheel resurfaced. The pits will grind the lining off the clutch in no time at all!

On the brakes, the turning is the most overblown deal just to make more money. Ask a cab company how they do them. As long as they are true and not too seriously grooved, the roters do just fine as is. Mine have 260,000 and have never been surfaced, stop just fine. Cab companies are known to just slap pads on regardless of the wear or grooving. You will find little difference unless you have a brake problem that you are trying to cure.
Whew, thought I was going to open up another hornets nest with that one. I am from the old school of sorts, the 50's, then there was not the money to have work done that was not necessary and many times, that should be done, so you learned fast what you could get away with. In finances, with kids and cars, the kids always won.
Yea, Im 19. and just had to ask mom and dad for a new 13-1.25 sbc and a nv4500
yeish, you shoulda seen there faces. But just imagine that i got out with a new clutch, new tranny, new carpet, new speakers, 370's . new stickers and a new tint job....not to mention all the sound insallation out of dads caddy's trunk.

haulin I do the brakes myself and I usually resurface or replace my rotors just to keep them from imperfections like warping or vibration from them new rotors are only about $40 a piece only and a friend of mine has a machine to turn rotors, just what I like to do the cost for resurfacing my flywheel was $25 but if it was already resurfaced and just a little rust I would probably just gie it a fine light sanding like you described

For the most part i try. And i work for my Parents in a famliy owned biz. My pay is my truck and fuel
dad says it cost more to feed me though! I can even look back 5 and 6 years when i was younger and see the diffrence in the world. Its a shame its gotten so out of hand! I put off fixing my truck for 3 months and saved what money i could but it was just so expensive it had me in a big nasty bind.
lol I guess all we can do about the world is pray for it!
