Question on Possible Timing Problem?

Went to get the truck last night, Ran perfect halfway home from the shop. Coming out of a small town, I laid the hammer down in 4th, and made it to approx. 65mph/2300rpm, and she took a big dump on me.

Made a kind of POP, and white smoke everywhere. No OIL or Antifreeze, so it wasn't a head gasket. I don't even think boost was above 30psi.

I pulled over, and the truck idled fine, but the second you push the throttle, white smoke and rough running.

I "limped" it back to the shop, and it would run okay but missed if you kept the boost at ~20psi, but EGT's were 1000*+!

Was it timing slipping? Could I have hurt anything driving it like that?
The timing was supposed to be set at 17*, and the shop said they torqued the nut to 200ft lb, not 150. Could this be the culprit?

They are supposed th fix it this morning, so I just wanted to see if I could have screwed it up worse.

Thanks,
Chris

It definitely sounds like your timing slipped but I doubt it did any damage. If the pump shaft and timing gear aren't cleaned extremely well it doesn't matter how tight it's torqued it will slip.

Whew!! Great, that's what I thought.

If it slipped, it slipped bad. It backfired once and shot a 2ft flame out the exhaust.

That woman on the sidewalk didn't know what to think or do!!!

Wow that must have been quite a sight. Normally you use brake cleaner or equivalent on the nut and shaft to ensure it staying, right?

Something... I really don't know. They ordered a new nut and washer for it, we'll see what that does.

One of our mechanincs in the shop suggested Loc-tite. They can't understand why it has a tapered shaft, and no keyway or anything. Oh Well, we take what they give us I guess.

Anyone against Loc-Tite? that should stick it in place, but it should still come off alright if I ever need to do it again, shouldn't it?

Just throwing out Questions,
Chris

I think Loctite would make it more prone to slip, too much torque.
Best way is to make sure the shaft and pulley is spotless.
Electronic cleaner is better than brake cleaner as it leaves no residue.

If it had a keyed shaft you wouldn't be able to adjust the timing.

I was wondering about that, but the shop working on it had to send it off anyway, they said to set the timing. They couldn't advance it as far as I wanted, 17*, so they sent it off.

They wouldn't be full of a certain smelling substance would they?

I'm almost clueless as far as actually how to adjust the timing, but I know why we do.

Thanks for all the help Guys, and Bill

I thought that 16*-16.5* was about the limit on a timing advance. How much can a person advance these things?

I heard of some guys using these trucks for sled pulling advancing them up to 30
Once you get this high starting is difficult and blown head gaskets are common.

I've heard, but never tried it, that 19 is is a better timing advance for the small '94&'95 pumps.

Chris, it's pretty obvious to me that these guys don't know what they're doing, I'd go elsewhere or print up these directions for them to follow.

Timing slip should be the issue here, I once had the timing slip on me about 1/2 a round and couldn't get over 1100 RPM's without it popping, from that point on I always use a new washer every other time and a new nut after every few times and if I do timing for someone it always gets a new washer every time.

Clean the pump shaft off very well and blow it dry if able. Brake Cleaner works good but electrical cleaner dries a littel better.

We'll see if they get it right this time, if not, they're cooked.

Just in case, anyone know somewhere in Ohio/Eastern Indian/Northern KY that has done quite a few of these?

The truck was running great, but didn't have near the low end it did. I'm attributing that to the Timing/Gov Springs, though.

I may need to adjust the Gov Arm now, to get me low end back. Used to hit real hard at 1700, and pull to 2300. Also, she'll wrap clear out to ~3400-3500. WHOA

Too bad I never got to see what she really had

Thanks A Bunch,
Chris

Chris,
Wait, Wait Wait!!!!! 99% sure its your timing. I live in Jeffersonville, IN. The guy who CAN fix your truck lives in North Vernon, IN. (Just outside of Seymour) He is awesome, he can do anything with your 12 valve, and he knows more about it than just about anyone, I can almost guarantee it. I'm new on dtr, how do I get in touch?

Picked it up tonight.

100mi later, runs good. They put a new nut and washer on it.

The power is there, somewhere. I need to learn to adjust the gov arm to get it back where I want it - ~1700 hit hard.

It's nice being able to spiin it to 3000 with full power, but my truck still barley does 100mph (I know, fast enough for 7700lbs, but I'm young and stupid!) I think That has something to do with the flatbed front sticking out 8' wide, catching wind.

OVERALL, Runs Good, just need to tune it back in to me. I will be needing a turbo, once she hits 2700rpm the pyro goes from 1200 STRAIGHT TO 1400+, I can let out, but that's no fun. And those 300's I've got in the back won't help much either.

Thanks Again For All the Help Guys,
Chris

Dave, thanks for the Tip, If I need anything else, I'll be sure to PM you, or you can do the same!

Do not let anyone reuse the lock washer when timing your pump, as for the 95's cummins came up with a retro lock washer and the new torque spec to prevent slipping . Sounds like the shop didnt have the proper service manuals.

Id Love to have one of those sets of 3.55's
With 4.10s I can get 90 without GS's . I just havent had the money. But with hitting 50-55 lb of boost with a hx40 at only 1000 deg , i think im doing pretty good. I think thats got somthing to do with 5 inch all the way, im not sure tho!
