pulling engine, need advice

Ive got a 94 2x4 regular cab automatic 12 valve and I am getting rwdy to pull the motor. I have the hood off, radiator out, intercooler out, Basically eberything else off or disconnected to pull it out. Question, does the trans need to come off or can I pull the engine and the trans at the same time??? The clearance for the oil pan to the crossmember is really tight and the cowl and the valve covers are very tight. Any advice would be helpfull.

Thanks

you don't have to pull the tranny but it is a tight fit between the cowl and the cross member. you can pull the trans and tranny together, either way will work. don't forget the fuel lines when you go to pull it or the wires to the trany.

A tight fit is putting it lightly. Dayum, how did dodge ever get that thing in there. Between the crossmember and the cowl it just doesnt look possible. I will see what happens again on Saturday.

Sounds like you are getting a handle on it. The clearance problem between the valve covers and cowel, pan and crossmember is a very tight fit. Sometimes it helps to remove the cab bolts and jack up the cab a little.

PUt a strap under the transmission, unbolt the bell, pull the pan, then it pulls straight out. It's not a problem that way. You just have to raise it enough to clear the mounts.

Dixie, you mean pull the engine pan, not the tranny pan correct? Makes sense. I will try some more tomorrow. I like the unbolting the cab mounts idea. If this doesnt work then the pan will have to come off. If I take off the engine oil pan I should be able to leave the tranny on shouldnt I?? Or maybe I wont be able to pull the pan with the tranny attached??? I am sure I will figure it out once I get back under there. I hope the V10 is easier to pull than this was.

Thanks for the tips

Yeah you pull the engine pan and then the oil pickup, it allows the engine to go foreward as far as the sump was. Never tried unbolting the cab, don't think I would do it that way, but that is me.

I have one question, What are you going to use to lift the engine and tranny together? Thats alot of weight, its got to be 1200-1400lbs. I have pulled a big block chevy out of my other truck without a tranny on it and it was about all my cherry picker could handle. My friend had to use a wrecker to pull his 7.3 powerjoke.

I dunno, I figured I could get on one side and my dad on the other and then.....hahaha no we are using a hydraulic front loader on a backhoe. Should be doable. Thanks for the concern though. How are the new mods to your truck treating you?? Have you dynoed yet?? I have been following your progress and that is about what I hav planned for mine.

Pulled the engine today. Loosened the cab bolts, jacked it up and it came right out. Thanks for all the advice.

Question, what the cannister on the passenger side of the engine block?? Is it some kind of pump or accumulator??? The auto tranny lines run to and from it and the water lines run to and from. Anyone???

Its a heatexchanger for the tranny. It heats up the tranny fluid quicker in cold temps and also keeps the tranny fluid cooler when its hot out. It also gets in the way if you want to put a real big exhaust on 5" or bigger (twins)

So its not really needed then?? Manual trannys wont have them correct?? what would it hurt if I removed it and plumbed the tranny lines to an aftermarket cooler??

Thanks

Correct manual tranny trucks do not have a heat exchanger.

Most guys that are running twins remove the heat exchanger without any worries.
