Problem with lift pump....help!!!!!
Any secrets to installing a new lift pump? My original pump was making a tick-tick noise so I popped in a new one but could not get it to hold a prime. I thought the problem was an air leak from rhe short hose between the fuel heater and the pump....replaced it! Still could not prime up. Tank is full and truck was running fine before pump change. I cracked the bleader on top of the seperator and pumped the plunger forever but would only get bubbles.
Is there anyone I could talk with that could give me some insite? Thanks!!

I don't know if the 12valve is the same as the 24valve in lift pump comparison.
But i could bump the starter and the pump would kick on and start priming automatically. But if it is not priming or the lift pump is not working then i would take and check all of your connections fuel and electrical again.
If still you have nothing then take the pump back off and make sure it is running on a bench test. Get two fuel cans one empty and one full and test it there.
I hope this helps..

While the new pump was on I removed the short hose between the heater and the lift pump and installed a hose to the inlet of the pump. Stuck the hose in a can of fuel and pumped the primer bulb. I got some fuel in the line and then cracked the bleeder screw and pumped some more and it appeared to prime up. I started the truck with the line in the can and it ran for a short while but then lost the prime! Never could get it back.
You don't say what year it is, but if you have an air compressor, use it to prime your filter. Make sure you loosen the nut on top of the filter so the air has somewhere to go. (my 96 is like this) Works best with a second person to watch for fuel coming out the top of the filter. Infidel has a post where he talks about making a spare fuel cap with an air chuck on it, but holding a rag around your blow gun works too. Not very much pressure, 5 psi is probably enough. That will get the air out of your line for the initial start up.
If you are still having issues after that post back and I'm sure we'll be able to help you out.

IT is a '97 5.9
I am alon today. I read Bills tips and it sounds good but I do not have an extra cap. Any way to pressure the tank without messing up the cap? The one good thing is the ticking noise was not there when I did get it to fire up but I know it could return.
This started with a ticking noise. I thought it was the valves so I adjusted them and the noise was still there. I listened around and determined it was comming from the pump. I put a little pressure on the primer bulb while running and the noise went away...so I am tring a new pump.

Got it going!!! Put on a new set of clamps between the heater and pump. Primed right up. Still has the ticking noise but not as bad. Here is what I have determined: Originally the lift pump was bolted directly to the block with only a gasket. Then they added the fuel heater...its mounting bracket goes directly behind the pump and it also uses a gasket! I did not measure anything but the addition of the heater bracket and gasket looks to add just under 1/8" to the spacing of the pump to the cam lobe. Just a little wear in the acuator rod or cam can lead to a situation where the rod does not stay on the cam at the cams low spot. When the high spot comes around and strikes the rod you get the tick-tick. You can confirm this buy putting a slight pressure on the primer bulb while the ticking is present....it will stop ticking and start again when you release the bulb. I am going to check with Carter(pump mfg) to see it they have a cure but I dought I will get anywhere!
Thanks for all your Help!!!!
