primer pump
high all just got a 98 ctd auto a couple a weeks ago love the truck lots of power. My question is this it seems to crank more than my dads 95 ctd to start unless i give it a little push on the throttle while starting then it fires right up so i figured i'd change the fuel filter canister style , while priming it i heard what sounded like an air leak is it just a bleader or should i be looking for a broken line somewhere? thanks for any help

I get that too, when I don't open the bleeder bolt, I can't trace where it is coming from, it sounds like it's from the injection pump. I am wondering about this, too.

The most common cause of the need to press the throttle a bit to get a 12 valve started is slipped timing.
The noise you hear when you are priming is the overflow valve flowing excess fuel back to the tank, and is normal. If the valve keeps flowing after you quit priming, pull the small plug from the center of it and check the spring and follower to be sure they are not broken. That can cause hard starting too.
On the 94 make sure you have a two piece overflow valve. If you still have the one piece OEM valve, replace it.

The hiss you hear when priming with the bleed bolt closed is the air/fuel going though the OF valve.
Your idle may be set too low if you need to push down on the throttle while starting.
