Please Help..clanking noise near ac compressor

Hi everyone, I started my truck earlier this evening, and a loud, clanking, metallic noise was coming from the area near the AC compressor. I'm a novice when it comes to mechanics, so I had a friend of mine check it out for me, and he seems to think that the sound is caused by play from the AC compressor pulley. I also looked underneath my truck and I noticed copper wire shaped shavings on the floor that were coming from the engine bay. As a matter fact, the copper bits were still warm when i picked them up. My truck is my daily driver, so I'm in panic mode right now, trying to figure out a way to get this problem fixed as soon as possible. I'm thinking of either bypassing the A/C compressor with the shorter serpentine belt, or biting the bullet and buying an ac compressor. Is there anything else that could be causing this clanking sound, and is there a recommended way of troubleshooting the problem? Thank you in advance for your help

Sounds like the bearing in the AC pully has let go. The copper bits might be from the clutch. You might be able to find a shop to just rebuild the front end of the compressor, not sure..

Thanks for the suggestion. I can just bypass the AC compressor with a non-ac serpentine belt right? I'm picking up the belt tonight, so I hoping i can get it my truck running by tomorrow. Hopefully this is the problem, and not something else, but thank you again.

I hope that does get you by until you can get the AC repaired. I am not sure on the routing without the AC, but it should be the same idler assembly.

My compressor did the same thing, replaced the clutch and the pump was shot. Put the belt on for no A/C and have been running it for around 20K with no issues. With a summer day in the 70's and nights in the 50's A/C is kind of a waste up here.
