Lot of people use them, many have complained of leaks. Even looks like the one in the article you linked to has been leaking. There are many other brands of bypass filters that do a great job. Shop around.
I know quite a few folks are happy with these> http://www.oilguard.com/HowItWorks.php

Just changed my oil today, had Farm & Fleet do it after purchasing the filter (Fleetgard) at a Case dealer. Filter cost was $11.00 from Case. Due to temperatures in this area, I decided to switch to 10w-30 for winter, however Farm & Fleet didin't have any C-rated (for diesel) oil that was 10w-30! Finally bit the bullet and bought Rotella Synthetic 5w-40 ($15/gal) so that upped the cost a bit. Rotella 15w-40 standard oil was $6.50/gal. Oh well, only charged $12 for labor and since I don't have a heated shop, figured that was worth it. Delaer o/c with standard oil is about $80 and my total cost came to $67. Not too bad--have 5000 miles to think about it.

Also for those who run synthetic Rotella, do you keep a 5000 interval on changes or space it out more?

Thats ok,Dr,I like saving the money like you do and run regular good oil.It sounds like plain delvac is hard to beat when that guy got 1,800,000 on his first gen.

Since we have oil analysis equipment at work I did extensive oil testing on several diesel trucks over several years. Dino Rotella & Delo was still good to go at 12k. Synthetic Delo still good at 27k. I would say you can very safely go 15-20k on syn Rotella but should still change the filter every 5k and add a quart of makeup oil. Adding a bypass filter will make it go even further but you should use oil analysis every 10k over 20k to insure it's still up to par.
