Oil Analysis

I seem to remember that an oil analysis will tell you if excess brass is in the oil--excess brass as in your rod bearings are shot. Does anyone have experience with oil analysis and whether this is true?

An oil sample will tell you if anything ill is going on within your engine.

The best thing is doing long term interval testing. That way they can build a baseline and let you know if something is just starting ti go.

in my opinion, an oil analysis is a waste of time and money unless something is happening in the engine that would warrant it, then a tear down would be in order!

I use blackstone analysis. Their reports are very detailed and fact based. As an example, if something is happening inside a motor with unusual high levels of " metal, byproduct or chemical" they would be able to detect it and possibly provide a resolution prior to a full mechanical failure. I look at their analysis just as you would your dash gauges, they're providing info on the internal moving parts, oil and respective wear. Hope this helps.

I use Blackstone, the sample i sent in for my 12V was to find out if any coolant was in the oil- the oil was perfect. My 2013 VW TDI however has 800PPM aluminum in every sample

Most likely coming from the camshaft journals as most overhead cam engines no longer use cam bearings. They ride directly in the aluminum head.
