I've been in Denver for job training all week and have only had one day off in 21 days, so I haven't gotten the transfer case rod done yet and haven't been able to drive it since the test drive. I'll be home tomorrow and need to charge the batteries as I forgot to unplug the brake lights when I was doing the swap and had a rod holding the brake pedal down a little to prevent all the fluid from leaking out. Can't wait to get to driving it though.
Good to hear, hope to see some picture when everything is complete. Does it have 3:54 or 4:10's?

The axles are out of an '01. Late '01 to be exact. The early '01 would be drum rear, but with a wider hub to match the front axle. I am taking it to get it aligned today. I drove it to town yesterday and I don't think my tape measure alignment is going to cut the mustard. I have to get the transfer case rod lengthened yet, but don't expect that to present any problems.

I will post several "done" pictures here in a day or two after the rod is done.

The axles currently have 3.54's, the same as the axles I took out. I was hoping for 4.10's when i got the axles, but it wasn't to be. I thought 4.10's would nice with my 35" tires. I did some playing with a gear ratio calculator and 3.73's would actually put my back to about the same ratio as the stock size tires and 3.54's, AND I could still use the Powr-Lok I already have in the garage that is a 3.54 carrier. So I'll probably go with 3.73's, but I'm going to wait and see how I like the truck as it is now.

GRRR, drove it some more yesterday and can feel a "grind" in it, along with a little ring/pinion noise. Got out after a mile of hwy driving and the rear diff is pretty hot. Guess I'll be doing a gear swap after all.

The truck I got the axles out of didn't look too well maintained, even BEFORE it was wrecked, but the front axle had new ball joints, axle joints, brakes, rotors, and hub bearings. So I figured that he was in the process of fixing a lot of the poorly maintained items and hadn't gotten around to the rear end before the crash. Still, got a SCREAMING deal on the axles. Good thing I guess.

3.73's here I come.

The NV4500 is sitting in the garage awaiting a new home. Thought it was sold before I did the swap, but now the sale is looking a little shaky.

Well, she's all done. Transfer case rod is in and the 4X4 works fine. I can't believe the swap is done. It's such a pleasure to drive with the 6-speed. The dual disc clutch is taking a little getting used to, at least I think that's what it is. Takes longer for the synchro's to line everything up when shifting, and downshifting takes even longer. Will get some pictures today and post them of the completed truck. (Any excuse to show off my truck)

On another note. Still haven't heard anything from the guy supposed to buy the trans. so I guess it'll just go up for sale. I've sent PM's to a couple of guys that have already asked about it. The old axles are up for sale too.

I know a few of you were looking forward to seeing more pics. Here's a teaser pic of my truck for now. I haven't driven it much because I don't want to ruin the rear housing if I lose a pinion bearing. I've had a hard time matching schedules with the guy that's going to help me with the gear swap, but we're hoping a week from Monday is going to work. I plan on taking lots of front to back pictures while the truck is on the lift. And in case anyone was wondering, I LOVE MY TRUCK.

P.S.-I have listed everything I took out for sale on craigslist. It's all on westslope.craigslist.org.

Help!

first time owner of a Cummins. I've got a 94 5.9 12 valve that's pushing about 500hp and I just grenaded my nv4500....what would it take to swap an nv5600 into my truck?

If it is a 4x4…
You would need the NV-5600, 4x4 linkage, you would want the NP-241 DHD T-case if your came with a DLD T-case, most likely the crossmember, both driveshafts or modify yours, the starter spacer and longer bolts, maybe a different clutch and flywheel depending on the year NV-5600 you use. I am not sure if the clutch slave is different.
There is the short list of needed parts.

And don't forget a ton of spare ( expensive ) NV5600 parts.

Typically it is not as strong as the NV4500.

Might want to also consider the G56.
