NV4500 came in, few Q's
Alright so I finally found a used box for an auto conversion and I picked it up yesterday. Seems like a decent deal so far, came complete with bell housing, clutch arm and shifter. I need to figure out the mileage of the truck it came off of, I didn't even ask when I bought it. Whole deal was $1400 shipped.
Anyway, I was just looking at it all and had a few questions. It was supposedly from a 98 diesel, 12 or 24v I don't know. The shifter seems to be missing a spacer of sorts, when the ball is seated up against the sockets on the shift rods, there is about a 3/8" gap between the case and the plastic holder. Any ideas?
Also, the rubber boot on the plastic holder/pivot point is torn, concerned with leaking?
Third, there are two boots on the shifter, the lower/inner bolts to the floorboards from below, no? And the outer boot screws to the floorboard from up top? Never seen one up close, so I'm just guessing here.
The mounting plate at the rear of tranny was just cut off on one side, maybe unbolted from the other. There is a bushing on the driver side, similar to the exhaust mount bushing on the passenger side of my auto....
Lastly, there was part of a wiring harness, with what looks like O2 sensor wires hanging off cut, two whites a black and a grey. Up stream there was an empty 4 point plug two. Did 24V's come with O2 sensors or something? Or was this from a gasser? I'm working on some pictures to clarify, but thanks for any help. I can't wait to finish this....
Oh and it came shrink wrapped with a rag stuffed in the shifter hole, but I'd like to check out the inside a little. Pop the top off? Anything special I need to know? I'll also check out the 5th gear situation...any suggestions on a fix? I remember reading quad 4x4's torque king is just that, but they are sold out I believe.
Thanks again, I know there's a lot I'm asking, but I'd like to iron out the little details before the rest of the parts show up....then its go time!

1: There is a rubber spacer that goes between the shift tower and the top cover.
2: There is always the chance of leakage. You could try running it with the rip and monitor, but that exposes it to water getting in as well. Replacing would be the best solution IMO.
3: The ribbed boot screws into the cup holder console. The inner goes to the floor boards like you thought.
4: That plate is probably just bolted on th wrong way, should be on the passenger side. IIRC, the other side comes out past the tranny with a bit of a bend in it. Regardless, flip it around the other way if you want to use it.
5: The only plug on the tranny is for the reverse lights. As far as I know, its only a two pin connector. Its at the front of the top cover on the driverside. If it doesn't plug in to the tranny, I'd toss it in the corner. 24v didn't come with any O2 sensors.
If you are pulling the top off, I'd make sure its in neutral first. The pads on the shift forks can come off, so just be careful when taking it off and putting it back together. I just used RTV when I buttoned mine back together.

Excellent, thanks!
I just checked the shafts, input is a 10 spline at 1.245", pilot stud measures .75", so should be from a diesel. Output measured 1.468 at the splines, 29 spline.
The O2 looking wires just boggle me because they were obviously spliced with heat shrink over it about 4 inches away from the connector like someone changed a sensor and couldn't reach the connector...oh well.
Any other ideas on the 5th gear fix? I'll open it up tonight to see if it's been done already, although I won't hold my breath. Thanks again.
And yes there is only one connector on the tranny, top drivers side a 2 wire.

Here's how I fixed my 5th gear. It's probably not the cheapest option unless you have some machine work connections like I do.

You could always weld the existing nut to the shaft like some guys do, but I preferred not to do that so I chose this route as it could create a point of failure.

Mine was delivered through NewPenn, and it took just over a week because of the nasty weather that hit the east coast. Any local trucking company should be able to accomodate, but they charge extra for liftgate service to a residential address, so just call the receiving address a business and you should be all set.
That really sounds like O2 wiring you have on there. With that and the funny exhaust bracket you describe, I'm thinking this may have been bolted to a V10. The V10 version may have had the bigger input shaft like the diesel version, but I'm not sure of the ratios, or any other differences.

I think Dodge did some wierd stuff through the 90's, my 96 Dakota doesn't even have EGR on it. When you open the hood it looks like a 70's pickup, round air cleaner and all, yet it is OBDII. Oh well, if the shafts line up I'll be happy. Now to find a mainshaft for the NP241...
