Noise from NV4500 over 2k rpm
Noise from NV4500 over 2k rpm
Hey guys ... I've got a '95 5 speed that has recently developed a sort of "whirring noise" from the transmission or flywheel area at over 2,000 rpms. The noise is most noticeable in the cab and sounds a little like radio static. It does it in all gears and will continue to do it with the clutch in and rpm's kept up above 2,000. The old girl only has 235k on the transmission and less than 30k on the South Bend OFE clutch and new flywheel. Fluid is okay in all gearboxes (pickup is religiously maintained). Has anybody else's truck developed this noise? I am afraid it's the sound of a dying transmission. The castrol syntorq (to the bottom of the filler hole) is about 2.5 years and 50k old. Is there anything I can do to diagnose what part of the transmission the noise is coming from? Thanks for any help in advance . . .
Sounds like something is rubbing on the cab. Check underneath for a bracket or something that has come loose. I got a good rattle from my 4X4 selector as it was hitting the bracket underneath.
Just to clear, it only makes noise when coupled to the engine? (clutch engaged)

Well . . . it will make the noise when the clutch is in (tranny disengaged from engine) if I keep the rpms up with my right foot and we're driving down the road. It does not make the noise sitting in the driveway with the rpms pushed up above 2k.
