New diesel

i was looking at a couple of dodge rams both are cummins 12v turbo 1 is 4x4 and the other 1 is 4x2. I was planing on getting the 4x2 instead beacause the 4x4 has been raced and has welded spider gears.

http://lexington.craigslist.org/cto/2192771720.html 4x2

http://louisville.craigslist.org/cto/2204547533.html 4x4

anyone know anything about these trucks? iv heard that the 4x4 have trouble in the front end. i was wondering if i should get the 4x4 or the 4x2 any info? im new to diesels

I would stay away from a 4x4 with welded spiders. who knows what else they have trashed on it. Yes the 4x4 will wear out the front end more.

Do you need 4x4. I have it because I feel that I need it on my truck even with the extra cost / maintenance. If you do not need it or do not care then get the 2wd. but either way I would not consider the welded spiders. JMHO

Personally, I would be very careful with either one. Any truck that has been modded needs to be looked over carefully. If you don't know what you are looking at, take someone with you who does, or walk away and keep looking.
Personally, I wouldn't buy a 2wd. Both 2wd and 4wd will take maintenance. Both will wear out parts. A 4wd will cost more, but it will also have higher resale value, and will sooner or later get you out of a bind. I need 4wd, and it is well worth the extra expense to me.

I would probably walk from both of those.

Of the 2, I would probably look to the 4X4 and get those welded spiders out.

I would also treat both as a playtoy driver until I had them all figured out.

i looked over the 4x4 cheack for leaks drove it it drove pretty good except turning with the welded spider gears in the front couldnt turn it after a certain point. the guy said it was raced in a straight line in dirt didnt do any hard pulling. but i dont belive him since it had a nice size tow hook, maybe it was in truck pulls. im going to look at the 2wd maybe over the weekend see if there is any problems. any ideas what to look for mostly on the 12v cummins?

I wouldn't waste my time even looking at either of those trucks.
Find a stocker that hasn't been modded and do the mods yourself.
Never pay extra for any mods, for most buyers they actually detract from the price.
It's a very small group of people who would want a truck that's been raced.
