My Tranny Hates 40 Miles Per Hour!!!

1995 3500 DRW, automatic tranny, 140,000 miles. I have only had it since last November so I can't really speak to what treatment it has had or what it did in its prior life but I pull a couple of big trailers every now and then. When I am cruising along at about 40, either with a load or not, the torque converter seems to lock and unlock. The only way to make it stop is to accelerate a little. Anyone have any idea what might be wrong.

https://www.dieseltruckresource.com/...&highlight=tps Read thru this, does it do it when you pull it down into third? If so your tps is most likley dirty inside or out of voltage adjustment. Goodluck,,Rick

Kandgo sounds right on, this will help repositioning it upon reassembly. http://dodgeram.org/tech/transmissio...TPS_adjust.htm

Wow, thanks for the quick replies. They seem to be right on point. Now another question....Do you guys tow in OD, or do you turn it off?
Thanks again,
Rick

Tow in OD if the rpm is above 1750. This is my rule of thumb for all OD conditions. It helps the trans get proper oil flow.

If you want your tranny to last, towing or not, turn the OD off till you're going over 55.

There was a thread somewhere were you could rewire the OD button to stay off till you need it. I was going to do it to my 94 auto and then I got a 5spd, I think it would be nice to have it that way. Goodluck,,Rick

The comment about leaving the overdrive off until you go over 50 is interesting. I will try it the next time I drive the truck. I read alot about putting in a switch for manually locking the torque converter. Other than some transmission breaking I was wonder what benefit you would get from this versus just letting the transmission do it automatically?
Thanks again for everyone's quick answers, this forum is great a place.

You can let it do it automatically, I usually do but where I live the stoplights are fifty miles apart and speed limit between them is 70.
If you're driving in city stop and go lock OD out.
