Mine has ticked since I got it at 250k. Didn't know it was the LP...At about 280 now. Been through 3 filters. should I get a new one? Got my f/p gauge, just need to plumb it. I do have the newer style o/f valve. Truck runs extremely well....except for the tick.

I've got almost 190 on the truck now, and I've heard the "tick" (between the cab and bed only really) for about 50k now. Sometimes its barely noticeable, other times I can hear it from 40ft away. Needs fuel filter too, but I've got no signs of the pump not supplying enough fuel.

What is the difference between the old and new style overflow valve? Advantages? I remember checking the spring on mine, and I also remember it being a major PITA to get valve with the spring and little washers back in to where they belong.

I also have the tick, does that alone warrant a new lift pump? no fuel pressure guage so I have no idea what it's running at, but it seems to pull like a freight train.

No real advantage though some might say not being able to stretch the spring to get a few more miles out of the valve is a disadvantage.
I wouldn't be surprised if Bosch redesigned the new style OF valve so people couldn't stretch the spring.
Stretching the spring without a fuel pressure gauge can be a very expensive mistake when overpressure blows out internal injection pump seals.

Well you boys are laughing at me but ... I called you boys because I'm 60 and I wish I wuz your age .. Now I was a sercive adviser and worked there for 7 years .. I had to score a 93 or above on fixed correct the 1st time to get a bonus... From Chrysler .. I got that bonus all but 3 months I was there ...Buy the way that BONUS was $500.00 every month .. Now all dealers didn't do that well granted ..I talked to some that never got or that scored about 65 .. But not ours ... And here's the kicker I got fired because I wasn't doing a good job taking care of customers after 7 years..
....I was in AWH hhh..... So I flipped them the Bird and walked out ..the stress level will kill you if you try......65 hrs a week ...So I told them. KMWA.

Where did you get just the spring?

It was the spring from my second pump. If you have ever disassembled a pump you know that the cam driven plunger pushes on a one way valve that sucks fuel from the tank. A spring pushes it back down as the cam lobe turns. When that spring gets weak it becomes shorter and does not maintain contact with the valve. That is the ticking sound. My second pump didn't tick, it was sending metal shavings to the filter. The valve was wearing out the wall of the cylinder. I compared the spring from it to the spring out of the first pump and found it was 1/4 inch longer, so I installed it into the original pump. To my way of thinking it is fixed "correct". If it doesn't last all I am out is a couple hours of time.

I was aware of what the spring does, I just wanted to know where you got a replacement. Now I know you got it from a spare pump, was hoping you had a source for just parts!

Sorry. The narrative was just general info for anyone reading this thread. Wish I had a source for parts also, I just threw two good bodies into the scrap pile. Since Carter used to be the supplier for Cummins I wonder if they make the parts available?

Probably not allowed to sell just parts for some legal reason. There must be a way to get parts, they have them to build new pumps!! Must not be enough margin in just parts to justify selling.

I'm at 297k miles with the original lift pump, overflow valve, injection pump, everything except fuel filters and level sending units. Even tried killing it a few times by clogging up all 3 filters(in tank, block prefilter and normal one) so bad it wouldn't run.

I think I have a freak truck because it even still has the stock untouched auto trans without a trans cooler(killed in a wreck).

I have feared the LP was going out from hearing it tick, but changing fuel filter and cleaning out screens has made it quit.
