Hi Guys
Today was the first day after 3 weeks of doing work on the new to me dodge that I was able to get it out on the road ... not bad just one oil leak .

I have figured out from all the other posts that my truck should not be idling at 500 rpms ...it has a little loping , but as soon as I bring it up to 600 it's very happy .

What would have caused the rpm to be so low ... if it in park the rpms are around 600 .

I am going to order a over flow valve this week ... it looks like the stock one , would the over flow have anything to do with such a low rpm .

I did find Dr.evils post about adjusting the idle , but I did want to find out if there was anything that would have could have caused this .

The truck runs great ... just that low idle is bugging me .

Sometimes during the process of opening and closing the throttle, the stop will eventually wear a "groove" in the idle adjusting bolt - thus lowering the idle. If you have the "groove" it also makes adjusting the idle touchy.

I replaced the bolt on mine to get rid of the problem.

 

Just adjust ur idle and ull be

good to go, it should be at about 650 minimum in gear, and with AC on... about 800 or so in park... mine idles in neutral at about 750 or so...

The timing may have slipped as well. Your idle should actually be set at 850 in gear with a/c on.

 

Yup...found an issue with the throttle cable assembly and had to redo my idle again. Lots of fun doing it in 28 degree weather with a stiff wind...

 

How dose the timing move on cummins , It runs really strong , it just has a really low idle ...
The truck dose have a ATS exhaust , I bleave a wheel and a amsoil air cleaner , and a flow master mufler ... thats coming off .
I am going to check that adjustment bolt today .

Dont forget,

I needed two 10 mm box end wrenches to loosen the bottom bolt, and then tweak with the one of the idle...

The nut is apparently not torqued properly from the factory and allows the timing to slip. My idle had dropped a couple of times so i just adjusted the stop, took it in this spring to get idle bumped to 15*. It was sitting at 7* factory is 13*.The mechanic said pretty much everyone he does is slipped and they were betting if it was at 7* or 9*.
