Loud clicking on left side, tried the usal fixes

My 1995 12 valve runs perfect until it warms up that takes about 5 miles in our 50 degree weather. It then makes and intermitant loud clicking noise and looses speed until it stops clicking and then the truck takes off again. At highway speeds it will come back to life before I am going too slow. Around town when clicking it won't idle and requires that the pedal be smashed to the floor and a fair amount of cranking to fire up. During these times the trottle also tends to stick somewhat. I have replaced the lift pump and the pressure valve on the return. I have replaced fuel hoses and filter. I have dropped the tank and inspected the fuel pickup and screens. I am stumped as to the problem and fear that it is the fuel injection pump itself. Are these symptoms of a failing injectior pump, in light of everything else I have done.

Thanks,

Steve

could be the shutdown solenoid is not holding the fuel lever open, it has two positions. with the switch in on or run position it clicks up to the first position, then in the crank position it will click all the way up to full open and stay there until engine is shut off. mine was acting up a few years ago and wuold not start sometimes but the solenoid itself was ok. turned out to be a bad relay in the box on the left fenderwell that controls the solenoid. the clicking could be the relay or solenoid trying to stay in the run position.wire it all the way open and see if it acts up, if it runs normal then check the ohms through the relay and then the solenoid and see which is bad and replace.hope this helps to at least eliminate one thing that could be causing your problem

The lift pump is on that side and they have been known to clcick when they go bad. I change the fuel filter every 12 thousand miles. I think thats the receommended time frame.

I had a friend listen when it was clicking. The sound was coming from the fuel injection pump. Does that mean it is time for a rebuild?
