EGTs??

Hi, I was reading on another post about EGT's and most said they would be around 700-900* cruising at about 65, I have a new auto-meter pyro and cruising at about 60-65 I am running down around 400-500. Is this right? Is my guage wrong? The senser is in the old emmissions cross over tube hole that it used to have because it was a california special. I have a 180 pump (california) and a #6 torque plate running about 250-260 hp, BAHF, stock straight pipe, and a slightly smaller boost elbo. also, i had my cousin move the plate a little and before i could hardly make it past 750* in 5th going up a hill, now i can get to about 900* or more if im "stuck" the whole time up the same hill. Also my guage is slow moving where as my cousin's (don't know the brand) is instant, is my guage not working right or is it just the type of guage? Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

not to sure about where the cross over tube is, the EGT probe needs to be in the manifold right before the turbo to serve any real purpose.

If I remember right it used bolt in slightly forward of where the second cylinder from the back vents its black smoke, it is also a threaded hole and a great easy place to put he senser, I was told it would work fine there and might be better because they are supposedly the hottest holes in the back (not sure why). I agree however that it should be in the center right before the turbo and I plan to eventually change that but my questions still stands so any more help would be great!!

thats interesting, new to the diesel scene i cant realy offer too much advise other then when drilling for the probe, DONT DRILL IN THE MIDDLE haha, theres a divider in there and it wont be pretty. I know my truck runs right around 600-700 at 70MPH, not sure how that compares to a 12V

Ya, The probe really has to be somewhere pre-turbo to give you any helpful info.

If you're worried about your EGTs move the plate back or put a stock one back in. You're gauge's behavior is probably due to the placement of the probe.

2 inches towards the motor from the turbo flange, and 3/4 inch to the front or rear from the center. Miss the internal gusset.

Other than that, everything has been said. Once the probe is in the right spot, you'll be able to keep an accurate eye on things. Be careful untill then.

I ve experienced autometers being really slow. I think its the larger probe models which Im not sure if they are still using. The ones I saw that were so slow they were useless used like a 3/16 diameter probe. All my digital and issopro use a 1/8th diameter probe.

I get another gauge/ probe to see.

Here is a link to a study of gauges done some time back. There is some interesting info on speed of registering temp.

I'm running 480* at 63mph so yours could be close. Running 70mph it runs 540*. I usualy try to hold it at 63mph though because thats its sweet spot for mpg.
