A little advice please

My son was wanting a newer truck but with the money he's got and what he's wanting I think it'd be better to get a little older truck. So he's now talking about the 94 to 8.5 trucks. What are the problems with these trucks? He's looking for a 5spd. So I guess...... what should we be looking for when we search? Thanks for the help.

2wd or 4x4? Check the front end for play everywhere, especially on the 4x4's. 5 speed can have a problem with the 5th gear nut falling off, causing you to lose 5th gear, but never heard of that leaving anyone stranded, just without 5th. KDP is the only other real problem. They are fun trucks and easy to wrench on and add some horses to. I think you have a good idea. Good luck with your search

On edit, the 94-95 have less HP stock than the 96-98.

Well his only requirments are 4x4 and a 5spd..... i knew about checking the front end out and the KDP.... but have never heard of the traany issue, on jeeps yes but not these trucks. So thanks for that! He's going to school for diesel mechanics so he'll be able to work on any but this will get him started. Thanks again.
