Let's talk turbo lag comparison

My truck has a WH1C turbo (I know, but it does) that came from the factory. I bought a slightly used HTTurbo HX-35 with a non waste gated 16cm housing several years ago.

My WH1C is quite responsive when you hit the throttle and I love it for that.

I just wonder how well the HTTurbo will respond to my set-up.

I have Bosch 215 injectors. AFE intake and Rips Rook 4 inch exhaust with 18.5* timing. Fuel pressure is good. I currently have the star wheel dialed in for mild smoke too.

I have a #6 TST plate and since I recently found the profile for a 100 plate I may grind mine into that plate (stock 160 plate).

I realize I can probably adjust the star wheel to hit harder and boost quickly, but I dislike a smoky truck and the wife complains too .

Also, like everyone with a low h.p. pump I would like to find a good set of 181 delivery valves to install.

I am not really worried about the power level as I am power delivery and drivability. Turbos with big lag suck!

With my plate full forward, I still only run about 1100* max EGT, so I think even with a 100 plate and more dv's, I can keep things cool or adjust as necessary.

Thanks in advance for your valued experience and input.

Ronnie

I think you at the most will need a 14cm housing if you add a lot of fuel. If you can only hit 1100* with a stock WH1C then I think your fine.

Will the turbo I have show a lot of lag without any other parts, just a star wheel adjustment?

The WH1C has the same 56mm compressor wheel as the HX-35. I have checked many of them. If you use your stock exhaust housing (12cm) it will be exactly the same but with the 16cm housing it will be slow to spool and egt's will rise. A 14cm works great but are $$. I have a 14 and love it and just made a 35/40 out of my 35 (56mm) and 40 (60mm) with the 14cmWG housing.

Thanks 1stGen.

So my WH1C has a 12cm housing? Cool, I will see about swapping the exhaust shell over then.

Yes you have a 56mm wheel and a 12cm so you realy may not gain anything with the 35 becose its the same size. The WH1C and HX-35 are the same turbo just have a diff way of holding the hosing on the comp side to the center section, WH1C uses an clamp and most HX-35 use a snap ring.

I have lost wastegate operation on my WH1C and have spooled it hard enough to bottom out my 35 PSI boost gauge. I suspect it has made 43-45 PSI on numerous occasions. I have moved the plate backwards to ease fueling and have become scared of making big boost with the WH1C.

Time to put it to rest and move on.

Thanks for your help 1stgen.
