Leak in rt. side axle & pyro temp

I don't want to make 2 posts, but I have two questions. First, I have the outer axle seal on the passenger side leaking gear oil pretty bad. I had the drivers side changed about 6 months ago, but I didn't have the passenger side changed. Yeah, I know, stupid. I've heard that the drivers side is much more difficult to change than the rt. side. Is that true? Anything difficult about changing the passenger side seal? Any idea how long it should take to change?

Secondly, I have bought a much larger trailer and I can now get my pyro gauge to show some real heat. My question is at what temp should I back off? My temp sensor is pre-turbo. I've been backing off before it reaches 1200. Is that right? Thanks!

The driver side seal is more difficult only because you must remove the differential carrier to change it, which requires wheel bearings and shafts on both sides be removed. The pass. side seal is in the disconnect housing, so you only have to disassemble the one side. The difficulty is that when installing the seal, there is no room to swing a hammer, and the seal must be pulled in from the outside of the axle tube. I use a threaded rod and a cup that fits the seal.

Regarding your pyro temp, most people use 1250 deg. as a rule of thumb.

First make sure your differental isn't over filled. 3/4" below the bottom of the fill hole is the recommended amount. I've seen dozens of differental leaks, front and rear, dry up after the fluid is at the correct level. It can take several hundred miles for the leak to stop because the axle tube has oil in it on the outside of the seal.
Also check that vent tube under the air box isn't clogged up.

If you do need to replace the seal here's instructions
