Red face KDP killed my gearcase

Well I put it off TOO long.. Bought my truck in march and had all the stuff to fix the KDP sometime in April. I have about 185,00 miles on the truck..

I just haven't had the motivation to fix the SOB..

Last week I had an HX40 turbo put on and the same day my truck started leaking oil very badly.. I drove all the way to Tennessee and back (it leaked about 1 gallon of oil) and decided yesterday that I needed to tab the KDP and fix the "leaky front seal".. Well.. I got some of the stuff off of the front of the motor and noticed the case was cracked..
Just great.. So I got the cover off and PLINK there goes the pin hitting the oil-soaked plastic on the ground. I don't think the gears are hurt.. but he pin is marred a bit from the teeth.

If you are putting this off, just DO IT.. This will cost me probably around $500.. I'll need to trailer the truck about 60 miles and have a shop heat the gears so I can get them off and put the new gearcase on.. They told me about $200 for the new case..

I was going to compete in Indy this weekend but now I get to take a car there and watch...

Point well taken, it's always the LITTLE things that we put off that come back to bite us in the *** later.

I still have to do mine. I have 160K on it, so I guess my time is fast running out. Kinda would like to get a little "over the shoulder" advice, but guess I'll get 'er done.

Hope it lasts till I have time.

Its not a "hard" job.. its just time consuming like everyone says.. I used the dodgeram.org site and it worked well.

**** this is crazy, when brandon bought that truck, i told him we needed to get it done. but then he sold it to you and bought a 97 12v 2wd for better miliage. it only had a 119k on it. so i tell him we need to get it done. 2 months later it drops the pin and blows the case out just like happened to you. i have seen 8 or so trucks now that have dropped them, and 4 happened after the owners knew about the dowl pin problems. me being one of them, make you feel stupid doesn't it. man that sucks, a good gear puller will pop the gear off with no heat, i used a big 2 jaw bar set up from snap on to pop brandon's off. the problem is putting the gear back on and holding the cam shaft forward. i would suggest a custon made pickel fork to do the job. i used a air hammer to seat the gear back in place. still was a pain in the butt. mike

Hey Mike.. Nice to see you on here again.

When I get this fixed next week I'll be putting some BIG injectors in it..

What kind of mileage was he seeing with the 2WD?
I got a best of 17.3 on the highway going between 70-73MPH on the way to Kentucky..
He should have changed the fuel filter It was quite dirty.. I gained a ton of power and fuel MPG after I did that

Thanks for the tips on pulling the gears.. We'll see what happens..

Here is what the truck looks like now:

Man, that happened to me about three years ago, I was going to pull one off of a spare engine I had sitting around but I seen that it was only a crack, that was dumping all that oil out, I thought "a good chance to use some JB WELD" so that is what I did and until this day it is still dry as a bone, not a single leak

JB Weld! Nice!

The edge of the case is totally mis-aligned.. so I don't think that'd be an option in this case

the 2wd truck did 19.6 miles per gallon with the cruise set on 78 mph with a 16' flat bed trailer behind it. it is the best miliage truck i have ever run across.

It depends on the extent of the crack whether you can glue it back together. If the crack goes all the way from front to back including the part that butts up against the block the case loses it's structural integrity.
I saw one that was glued back together with a full on crack like this where the weakened case allowed it to crack again by the injection pump. The result was a truck that wouldn't run, the injection, power steering and vacuum pump where only held on by the injector lines.
